View Full Version : Getting songs stuck in your head?

When ever I used to go on shorter 2-4 days trips I would always get a single song stuck in my head. I usually just sing aloud and it's all good.

Last summer I did my first semi long distance hike and I brought and ipod for the first week but I never used it so I sent it home. For the next 2 weeks I had the most annoying songs stuck in my head where I only knew a few lyrics. I really wish I had kept the 2oz ipod.

Anyways, do you notice you get songs stuck in your head on long thru hikes or does it pass? Any tricks to combat this, other than bringing along an ipod (not enough battery)?

The scientific name for this phenomenon is "earworm."

http://www.whiteblaze.net/forum/showthread.php?t=32352&highlight=earworms

The piece on NPR said that earworms occur when the brain is bored.

I called my family and talked to my then-13-year-old sister from Neel's Gap. Since it was playing in the background, I wound up with Aqua's "Barbie Girl" stuck in my head until Plumorchard Gap, an astoundingly annoying tune for three days.

Life in plastic is NOT fantastic........

haha... i usually just repeat a verse of a song over, and over, and over if it matches my foot steps. I know the feeling! I even do it if I don't really know the lyrics.

I think I did the entire franconia woods trail to the chorus of "pump it up" by Elvis Costello... I swear I was going nutty..

Glad I'm not the only one..

I get songs stuck in my head, too. Usually just a few lines over and over. It goes away once I force myself to think of something else. My poor husband had "Three Blind Mice" stuck in his head the whole time he was in the Army. UGH! Worst part was when he sang it to me he had the words wrong!!!!

I have one of two beats in my ear:
1. The ear worm is hammering out tunes, usually repeating until the hiker is on the brink of insanity or...
2. The "counter" is doing a job on me. I find that often I am counting my steps... ya it's weird, but I start "pounding out" a beat and there is a constant numbering with every step. Most of the time it is an unconscious cycle, when I become cognizant of it, it is usually in the 20's, 30's of 40's. So I am not consistently counting up, just counting.

AHHHHH.... the insanity! AAhhhhhhh the numbers :datz:eek:

For some reason I was haunted by the bad luck of hearing this one Beyonce song everytime I went in for resupply from Hiawassee to Damascus. I would gone through just about anything to get that song out of my head.

Always The Ramones "I wanna be sedated". I have no idea why, but it always gets stuck in my head when I'm out hiking.

Haha, that is exactly what I do. I often make up my own lyrics after I get tired of singing the same chorus over and over. I usually match my pace to it too.

Now this is the story all about how
My life got flipped, turned upside down
And Id like to take a minute just sit right there
Ill tell you how I became the prince of a town called bel-air

In west philadelfia born and raised
On the playground where I spent most of my days
Chilling out, maxing, relaxing all cool
And all shooting some b-ball outside of the school
When a couple of guys said were up in no good
Started making trouble in my neighbourhood
I got in one little fight and my mom got scared
And said youre moving with your aunte and uncle in bel-air

I whistled for a cab and when it came near the
Licensplate said fresh and had a dice in the mirror
If anything I could say that this cab was rare
But I thought now forget it, yo home to bel-air

I pulled up to a house about seven or eight
And I yelled to the cabby yo, home smell you later
Looked at my kingdom I was finally there
To settle my throne as the prince of bel-air

What a great band! I had the pleasure of seeing them perform in a small club in about 1975-76. What a show, I've never seen that much energy on stage before or since. I left at the end with my ears ringing, soaked w/ sweat, exhausted.

I had just found out that I got a job with an upstream oil company right before I went on the death march with my friend (mmm 1 week of unplanned bushwacking)

It was the last song that I heard in the car, and I would annoy the hell out of my friend by singing it whenever he asked me what was up.

"The Chemical Worker's Song (Process Man)"

[Chorus:]

And its go boys go
They'll time your every breath
And every day in this place your two days near to death
But you go

Well a process man am I and I'm tellin' you no lie
I work and breathe among the fumes that tread across the sky
There's thunder all around me and there's poison in the air
There's a lousy smell that smacks of hell and dust all in me hair

[Chorus]

Well I've worked among the spitters and I breathe the oily smoke
I've shovelled up the gypsum and it neigh 'on makes you choke
I've stood knee deep cyanide, got sick with a caustic burn
Been working rough, I've seen enough, to make your stomach turn

[Chorus]

There's overtime and bonus opportunities galore
The young men like their money and they all come back for more
But soon your knocking on and you look older than you should
For every bob made on the job, you pay with flesh and blood

[Chorus]

Well a process man am I and I'm telling you no lie
I work and breathe among the fumes that tread across the sky
There's thunder all around me and there's poison in the air
There's a lousy smell that smacks of hell and dust all in me hair

[Chorus 2x]

Just sit right back & you’ll hear a tale, a tale of a fateful trip
That started from this tropic port aboard this tiny ship.
The mate was a mighty sailing man, The skipper brave & sure.
Five passengers set sail that day for a three hour tour,
A three hour tour

The weather started getting rough, the tiny ship was tossed,
If not for the courage of the fearless crew
The Minnow would be lost,
The Minnow would be lost.

The ship's a-ground on the shore of this uncharted desert isle
With Gilligan,
The Skipper too,
The millionaire and his wife,
The movie star

The Professor and Mary Ann,
Here on Gilligan's Isle.

I have always loved the Grateful Dead (no comments, please:)) and my solution to earworms has always been a particular song that trumps all earworms. Scarlett Begonias from Cornell '77 will always do it for me. I can put it in my mind at any time and it will trump any bad earworm.:sun

Ever since I was a kid I've had earworms. But I discovered that if I run
either the theme from "Hogan's Heroes" or "F Troop" (man, am I dating
myself) through my brain the earworm is gone...totally! Works every time.
And, no, those two never become earworms.

Go figure. :-?
