Sluggish thinking and confusion are part of hypothermia. Probably why she didn't smash a window to get inside. Whiteside mountain trail is only a 2 mile loop with 800 foot elevation gain.

I've been super-cold many times and a few times I thought I might be on the brink of mild hypothermia. I often wonder if I had and if I would have the sense to rectify the circumstances if I ever do. Hypothermia is scary sounding stuff. This is sad.

A tragic incident indeed. The sad thing is she made it to the parking lot - she had the presence of mind to hike herself out - she just needed to break that window. A sad example on how even seconds count when dealing with hypothermic conditons.

Condolences to her family.

This story is an excellent example of why it is important to have a plan in place for what to do if you find yourself cold in the woods. Hypothermia will impair your ability to make a plan on the spot - and our wits are what we hikers rely on when things go awry. It also points out why we carry basic survival gear even on short day hikes.

It's hard sometimes to remember the reason for carrying something that never gets used, but as sad as these types of stories are, they serve as a good reminder for me.

Condolences to this lady's family

That's an awful tale, and a truly cautionary one. It's just a car window.
