I know this isn't answering the question, but I remember some really cool campsites near a creek while going down Snowbird (Standing Bear is at the bottom)

And on top of that you have to good down a stone stairway with 40 steps and cross Route I40 and cross a mighty river and view a beautiful waterfalls and...voila!!

I really liked Standing Bear Farm..I shall return some day.

Say Hi to Sprocket and Maria and Curtis.
Enjoy your hike.

I had good times there as well. Sprocket took me white water rafting in January. And Curtis busted out a Les Paul, we jammed all night.

Standing Bear was good for me. Davenport Shelter to south ~9 mi (in GSMNP) and Roaring Fork to north (~16 mi?). Roaring Fork was pretty cool (June 2010), Davenport not so much (June 2009)

Not that it matters a lot but I think it's closer to 3.5 miles isn't it? SBF is a pretty good ways from Davenport Gap Shelter- you gotta hike down the mountain, cross under I-40 at Waterville road and then hike around the side of a mountain to get to the bottom of Snowbird which is where SBF is.

Groundhog Creek at around 7ish miles north would be the closest shelter north of SBF.

Half way down Snowbird heading south is the Painters Creek campsite. Staid there last week. It is nice there is some dead falls across the tail to it though. Big nice group campsite. I had 8 people there and we had a lot of room. It is not marked just look for a little path that goes across the creek right off the trail and the campsite sets about 20 feet off the trail. From the campsite to Davenport gap (not the shelter but the road) is about 4.7 miles down hill.

After all this, the answer to your question is 3.5 miles south back into the GSMNP is Davenport Gap Shelter. This is the closest shelter.

Considering the question was asked 3 years ago I'd guess the OP has figured it out by now.

I didn't even read the thread and see where *I* replied to it 3 year ago!
