Rain Man
01-09-2004, 16:19
I was driving down the Interstate today listening to an oldies station, when the Creedence Cleerwater Revival song, "Who'll stop the rain" was played. Even mentioned Virginia in the lyrics. Here they are below. This band could've just returned from a thru-hike, I do believe!

Anybody else got any song lyrics that remind you of something about the AT? Any good AT "ear worms?" Please post the lyrics and don't send us all on wild goose chases looking for them, okay?

=================================
Creedence Cleerwater Revival

Long as I remember The rain been comin' down.
Clouds of myst'ry pourin' Confusion on the ground.
Good men through the ages, Tryin' to find the sun;
And I wonder, Still I wonder, Who'll stop the rain.

I went down Virginia, Seekin' shelter from the storm.
Caught up in the fable, I watched the tower grow.
Five year plans and new deals, Wrapped in golden chains.
And I wonder, Still I wonder Who'll stop the rain.

Heard the singers playin', How we cheered for more.
The crowd had rushed together, Tryin' to keep warm.
Still the rain kept pourin', Fallin' on my ears.
And I wonder, Still I wonder Who'll stop the rain.

James Taylor has a song called "Walkin' Man". Someone else will have to supply the lyrics. BTW, James Taylor lives near the trail in the Berkshires. His song "October Road" is names after the October Mountain State Forest through which the AT runs fairly near his house.

My girl, my girl, don't lie to me
Tell me, where did you sleep last night?
In the pines, in the pines, where the sun don't ever shine
I would shiver the whole night through.

Her husband was a hard-working man
Just about a mile from here
His head was found in the driver's wheel
But his body never was found.

My girl, my girl, where will you go?
I'm going where the cold wind blows
In the pines, in the pines, where the sun don't ever shine
I would shiver the whole night through.

Born a poor young country boy--Mother Nature's son
All day long I'm sitting singing songs for everyone.

Sit beside a mountain stream--see her waters rise
Listen to the pretty sound of music as she flies.

Find me in my field of grass--Mother Nature's son
Swaying daises sing a lazy song beneath the sun.

Mother Nature's son.

This old gospel songs captures how I feel hiking in the mountains.

The first two verses of How Great Thou Art

O Lord my God! When I in awesome wonder
Consider all the worlds Thy hands have made
I see the stars, I hear the rolling thunder,
Thy pow'r through-out the universe displayed

Chorus

When through the woods and forest glades I wander
And hear the birds sing sweetly in the trees;
When I look down from lofty mountain grandeur
And hear the brook and feel the gentle breeze

Chorus

These boots were made for walkin'
and that's just what they'll do.
One of these days these boots
are gonna walk all over you.

An old one from the 1960s -- don't remember who sang it: You'll never walk alone. I frequently hummed it -- mostly on level ground or going downhill.

I recall a Lou Reed song about a yellow blazer by the name of Holly from LA.

Not a good role model, though. Kept telling others to walk onthe wild side, even though she hitched her way across the USA.

Doo, doo, doo, doo, doo, doo, doo, doo ....

Walking Man by James Taylor

Moving in silent desperation
Keeping an eye on the Holy Land
A hypothetical destination
Say, who is this walking man?

Well the leaves have come to turning
And the goose has gone to fly
And bridges are for burning
So don't you let that yearning
Pass you by
Walking man, walking man walks
Well, any other man stops and talks
But the walking man walks

Well the frost is on the pumpkin
And the hay is in the barn
An pappy's come to rambling on
Stumbling around drunk
Down on the farm

And the walking man walks
Doesn't know nothing at all
Any other man stops and talks
But the walking man walks on by
Walk on by

Most everybody's got seed to sow
It ain't always easy for a weed to grow, oh no
So he don't hoe the road for no one
Oh for sure he's always missing
And something is never quite right
Ah, but who would want to listen to you
Kissing his existence goodnight

Walking man walk on by my door
Well any other man stops and talks
But not the walking man
He's the Walking man
Born to walk
Walk on walking man
Well now, would he have wings to fly
Would he be free
Golden wings against the sky
Walking man, walk on by
So long, walking man, so long

This is one of my favorite all time camping tunes. It brings back lots of memories of dark skies full of stars, warm fires and candle lanterns. My best buddies and I would sit by the fire and sing along to James Taylor's Best of disc sipping our favorite drinks until the sun came up. No, we were not the rowdy bunch that you might think, but in moments like these we were kings. Its good to be the king.

The Trees
by Rush

There is unrest in the forest,
There is trouble with the trees,
For the maples want more sunlight
And the oaks ignore their pleas.

The trouble with the maples,
(And they're quite convinced they're right)
They say the oaks are just too lofty
And they grab up all the light.
But the oaks can't help their feelings
If they like the way they're made.
And they wonder why the maples
Can't be happy in their shade.

So the maples formed a union
And demanded equal rights.
"These oaks are just too greedy;
We will make them give us light."
Now there's no more oak oppression,
For they passed a noble law,
And the trees are all kept equal
By hatchet, axe, and saw.

THIS IS MY FATHERS WORLD
(Babcock and Sheppard)
This is my Fathers world,
And to my listening ears
All nature sings and round me rings
The music of the spheres.
This is my Fathers world;
I rest me in the thought
Of rocks and trees, of skies and seas,
His hand the wonders wrought.
This is my Fathers world,
The birds their carols raise,
The morning light, the lily white,
Declare their Makers praise.
This is my Fathers world;
He shines in all that’s fair;
In the rustling grass I hear Him pass,
He speaks to me everywhere.

:)
Lord don’t move that mountain,
The Hoppers

Lord don’t move that mountain,
Just give me strength to climb.
For if you should move each mountain,
I might grow weaker every time.
Just as Your Son Jesus,
Took the cross up Calvary’s hill.
Lord don’t move that mountain,
So I may better do Thy will.

Now, I know that these are not exactly around the AT, but we loved all of his songs. Every year when my entire family goes camping, we have a John Denver concert. Everybody sings their favorite. These are mine.

John Denver-Country Road
Almost heaven, west virginia
Blue ridge mountains, shenandoah river
Life is old there, older than the trees
Younger than the mountains, blowing like a breeze

Country roads, take me home
To the place, I be-long
West virginia, mountain momma
Take me home, country roads

All my mem’ries, gather ’round her
Miner’s lady, stranger to blue water
Dark and dusty, painted on the sky
Misty taste of moonshine, teardrop in my eye

Country roads, take me home
To the place, I be-long
West virginia, mountain momma
Take me home, country roads

I hear her voice, in the mornin’ hours she calls to me
The radio reminds me of my home far a-way
And drivin’ down the road I get a feeling’
That I should have been home yesterday, yesterday

Country roads, take me home
To the place, I be-long
West virginia, mountain momma
Take me home, country roads

John Denver-Rocky Mountain High
He was born in the summer of his 27th year
Comin’ home to a place he’d never been before
He left yesterday behind him, you might say he was born again
You might say he found a key for every door

When he first came to the mountains his life was far away
On the road and hangin’ by a song
But the string’s already broken and he doesn’t really care
It keeps changin’ fast and it don’t last for long

But the colorado rocky mountain high
I’ve seen it rainin’ fire in the sky
The shadow from the starlight is softer than a lullabye
Rocky mountain high (high colorado) rocky mountain high (high colorado)

He climbed cathedral mountains, he saw silver clouds below
He saw everything as far as you can see
And they say he got crazy once, and he tried to touch the sun
And he lost a friend but kept his memory

Now he walks in quiet solitude the forests and the streams
Seeking grace in every step he takes
His sight has turned inside himself to try and understand
The serenity of a clear blue mountain lake

And the colorado rocky mountain high
I’ve seen it rainin’ fire in the sky
You can talk to God and listen to the casual reply
Rocky mountain high (high colorado) rocky mountain high (high colorado)

Now his life is full of wonder but his heart still knows some fear
Of a simple thing he cannot comprehend
Why they try to tear the mountains down to bring in a couple more
More people, more scars upon the land

And the colorado rocky mountain high
I’ve seen it rainin’ fire in the sky
I know he’d be a poorer man if he never saw an eagle fly
Rocky mountain high

It’s a colorado rocky mountain high
I’ve seen it rainin’ fire in the sky
Friends around the campfire and everybody’s high
Rocky mountain high (high colorado) rocky mountain high (high colorado)
Rocky mountain high (high colorado) rocky mountain high do de do

Living on the road my friend
was going to keep you free and clean
now you wear your skin like iron
breath as hard as kerosene
weren't your moma's only boy
favorite one it seemed
she cried when you said goodby
saddled to your dreams

Pancho was a bandit boy
his horse as fast as polished steel
he wore his gun outside his pants
so all the honest world could feel
Pancho met his match you know
in the deserts down in Mexico
nobody heard his dying words
and momma that's the way it goes

Lefty he can't sing the blues
all night long like he used to
the dust that Pancho bit down south
ended up in Lefty's mouth
the day they laid poor Pancho low
Lefty split for Ohio
where he got the bread to go
ain't nobody know

The boys tell how Pancho fell
and Lefty's living in cheap hotels
deserts quiet and Cleveland's cold
so the story ends were told
Pancho we need your prayers it's true
save a few for Lefty too
he only did what he had to do
and now he's growing old

All the federales say
we could've had them anyday
we only let them slip away
out of kindness I suppose

Thank you Willie

I’m Gonna Be Lyrics
Crash Test Dummies

When I wake up, well, I know I’m gonna be
I’m gonna be the man who wakes up next to you
When I go out, yeah, I know I’m gonna be
I’m gonna be the man who goes along with you

If I get drunk, well, I know I’m gonna be
I’m gonna be the man who gets drunk next to you
And if I haver, hey, I know I’m gonna be
I’m gonna be the man who’s havering to you

But I would walk five hundred miles
And I would walk five hundred more
Just to be the man who walked a thousand miles
To fall down at your door

When I’m working, yes, I know I’m gonna be
I’m gonna be the man who’s working hard for you
And when the money comes in for the work I do
I’ll pass almost every penny on to you

When I come home, oh, I know I’m gonna be
I’m gonna be the man who comes back home to you
And if I grow old, well, I know I’m gonna be
I’m gonna be the man who’s growing old with you

But I would walk five hundred miles
And I would walk five hundred more
Just to be the man who walked a thousand miles
To fall down at your door

When I’m lonely, well, I know I’m gonna be
I’m gonna be the man who’s lonely without you
And when I’m dreamin’ well, I know I’m gonna dream
I’m gonna dream about the time when I’m with you

When I go out, well, I know I’m gonna be
I’m gonna be the man who goes along with you
When I come home, yes, I know I’m gonna be
I’m gonna be the man who comes back home with you
I’m gonna be the man who’s coming home with you

But I would walk five hundred miles
And I would walk five hundred more
Just to be the man who walked a thousand miles
To fall down at your door

And I would walk five hundred miles
And I would walk five hundred more
Just to be the man who walked a thousand miles
To fall down at your door

The Police - King of Pain

There’s a little black spot on the sun today
It’s the same old thing as yesterday
There’s a black hat caught in a high tree top
There’s a flag-pole rag and the wind won’t stop

I have stood here before inside the pouring rain
With the world turning circles running ’round my brain
I guess I’m always hoping that you’ll end this reign
But it’s my destiny to be the king of pain
There’s a little black spot on the sun today
That’s my soul up there
It’s the same old thing as yesterday
That’s my soul up there
There’s a black hat caught in a high tree top
That’s my soul up there
There’s a flag-pole rag and the wind won’t stop
That’s my soul up there
I have stood here before inside the pouring rain
With the world turning circles running ’round my brain
I guess I’m always hoping that you’ll end this reign
But it’s my destiny to be the king of pain
There’s a fossil that’s trapped in a high cliff wall
That’s my soul up there
There’s a dead salmon frozen in a waterfall
That’s my soul up there
There’s a blue whale beached by a springtime’s ebb
That’s my soul up there
There’s a butterfly trapped in a spider’s web
That’s my soul up there
I have stood here before inside the pouring rain
With the world turning circles running ’round my brain
I guess I’m always hoping that you’ll end this reign
But it’s my destiny to be the king of pain
There’s a king on a throne with his eyes torn out
There’s a blind man looking for a shadow of doubt
There’s a rich man sleeping on a golden bed
There’s a skeleton choking on a crust of bread
King of pain

There’s a red fox torn by a huntsman’s pack
That’s my soul up there
There’s a black-winged gull with a broken back
That’s my soul up there
There’s a little black spot on the sun today
It’s the same old thing as yesterday

I have stood here before in the pouring rain
With the world turning circles running ’round my brain
I guess I always thought you could end this reign
But it’s my destiny to be the king of pain
King of pain
King of pain
King of pain
I’ll always be king of pain

This song also comes to mind whenever I'm on the trail:

Mama told me when I was young
Come sit beside me, my only son
And listen closely to what I say.
And if you do this
It will help you some sunny day.

Take your time... don’t live too fast,
Troubles will come and they will pass.
Go find a woman and you’ll find love,
And don’t forget son,
There is someone up above.

And be a simple kind of man.
Be something you love and understand.
Be a simple kind of man.
Won’t you do this for me son,
If you can?

Forget your lust for the rich man’s gold
All that you need is in your soul,
And you can do this if you try.
All that I want for you my son,
Is to be satisfied.

Boy, don’t you worry... you’ll find yourself.
Follow you heart and nothing else.
And you can do this if you try.
All I want for you my son,
Is to be satisfied.

Maybe this speaks to someone other than me...

I've dealt with my ghosts and faced all my demons, finally content with a past I regret. I’ve found you find strength in your moments of weakness. For once I’m at peace with myself. I’ve been burdened with blame, trapped in the past for too long;
I’m movin’ on.

I’ve lived in this place and I know all the faces. Each one is different but they’re always the same. They mean no harm, but it’s time that I face it; they’ll never allow me to change. But I never dreamed home would end up where I don’t belong;
I’m movin’ on. I’m movin’ on

At last I can see, life has been patiently waiting for me. And I know there’s no guarentees, but I’m not alone. There comes a time
in everyone’s life, when all you can see are the years passing by. And I have made up my mind that those days are gone.

I sold what I could, and packed what I couldn’t, stopped to fill up on my way out of town. I’ve loved like I should but lived like I shouldn’t. I had to lose everything to find out. Maybe forgiveness will find me somewhere down this road;

I’m movin’ on

Walk along the river, sweet lullaby, it just keeps on flowing,
It don't worry 'bout where it's going, no, no.
Don't fly, mister blue bird, I'm just walking down the road,
Early morning sunshine tells me all I need to know

Chorus
You're my blue sky, you're my sunny day.
Lord, you know it makes me high when you turn your love my way,
Turn your love my way, yeah.

Good old Sunday morning, bells are ringing everywhere.
Goin to Carolina, it won't be long and I'll be there

Chorus

One of their best tunes, imo, with one of the prettiest guitar solos by Dicky Betts you'll ever hear. Another thread along this same line was started sometime last year.

this song doesn't speak of the At but to me it sings of the magic I feel on the trail and true love in life.

Ripple

If my words did glow with the gold of sunshine
And my harp was played on the harp unstrung
Would you hear my voice come through the music
Would you hold it near as it were your own

It's a hand-me-down, the thoughts are broken,
Perhaps they're better left unsung.
I don't know, don't really care
Let there be songs to fill the air.

Ripple in still water,
When there is no pebble to be tossed,
Nor wind to blow.

Reach out your hand if your cup be empty,
If your cup is full may it be again,
Let it be known there is a fountain,
That was not made by the hands of men.

There is a road, no simple highway,
Between the dawn and the dark of night,
And if you go no one may follow,
that path is for your steps alone.

Ripple in still water,
When there is no pebble tossed,
Nor wind to blow.

But if you fall you fall alone,
If you should stand then who's to guide you?
If I knew the way I would take you home.

Here are my 2 favorites.

"Big City" by Merle Haggard

I'm tired of this dirty old city
Entirely too much work and never enough play
And I'm tired of these dirty old sidewalks
Think I'll walk off my steady job today.

Turn me loose, set me free, somewhere in the middle of Montana
And gimme all I got comin' to me
And keep your retirement and your so called social security
Big City turn me loose and set me free.

Been workin' everyday since I was twenty
Haven't got a thing to show for anything I've done
There's folks who never work and they got plenty
Think it's time some guys like me had some fun.

Turn me loose, set me free, somewhere in the middle of Montana
And gimme all I got comin' to me
And keep your retirement and your so called social security
Big City turn me loose and set me free.

The chorus from "Rocky Top" by various artists

Rocky Top, you'll always be
Home sweet home to me
Good ol' Rocky Top

I'm kinda new here and hope I haven't over stepped the boundries, but I heard this song the other day and thought about how appropriate it was for anyone undertaking a journey such as this. Perhaps one day my chance will come.

It's by Dan Fogelberg, and it's called "Along the Road", from his 1979 Phoenix album, you could subsitute "Trail" for "Road" if you wish.

So here's wishing all the 2004 hikers a great journey. If you can find the song it's much better hearing him sing it.

Along The Road
By Dan Fogelberg

Joy at the start
Fear in the journey
Joy in the coming home
A part of the heart gets lost in the learning
Somewhere along the road
Along the road your path may wander
A pilgrim's faith may fail
Absence makes the heart grow fonder
Darkness obscures the trail

Cursing the quest
Courting disaster
Measureless nights forbode
Moments of rest
Glimpses of laughter
Are treasured along the road
Along the road your steps may stumble
Your thoughts may start to stray
But through it all a heart held humble
Levels and lights your way

Joy at the start
Fear in the journey
Joy in the coming home
A part of the heart gets lost in the learning
Somewhere along the road
Somewhere along the road
Somewhere along the road

A few years ago some trail hiker had an entire song about the trail written over the lyrics from the Eagles HOTEL CALIFORNIA. It was called HOTEL APPALACHIA. I can't remember it all, but it was prety good.
The Marshall Tucker Band was and is a great southern rock band. The reformed band was not far from the A.T. at Sugarloaf Ski Area in Maine this past winter. The three Caldwell brothers all died young and two of them within a few weeks of each other.I don't remember how the group got it's name. Anyone remember "Fire On The Mountain" from Carolina Dreams?

this tune really helps me along when im on the trailWe've been through some things togetherWith trunks of memories still to comeWe found things to do in stormy weatherLong may you run.Long may you run.Long may you run.Although these changes have comeWith your chrome heart shining in the sunLong may you run.Well, it was back in Blind River in 1962When I last saw you aliveBut we missed that shift on the long declineLong may you run.Long may you run.Long may you run.Although these changes have comeWith your chrome heart shining in the sunLong may you run.Maybe The Beach Boys have got you nowWith those waves singing "Caroline No"Rollin' down that empty ocean roadGettin' to the surf on time.Long may you run.Long may you run.Although these changes have comeWith your chrome heart shining in the sunLong may you run.~Neil Young

You'll never walk alone- song is from the Rodgers and Hammerstein musical- Carousel. I know lots of people have recorded it, though.

words-
When you walk through a storm, keep your chin up high, and don't be afraid of the dark.
At the end of the storm is a golden sky and the sweet, silver song of a lark.
Walk on through the wind, walk on through the rain, though your dreams be tossed and blown-
Walk on, walk on with hope in your heart, and you'll never walk alone.
You'll never walk alone.

Road, I mean Trail to Nowhere
Talking Heads

WELL WE KNOW WHERE WE'RE GOIN'
BUT WE DON'T KNOW WHERE WE'VE BEEN
AND WE KNOW WHAT WE'RE KNOWIN'
BUT WE CAN'T SAY WHAT WE'VE SEEN
AND WE'RE NOT LITTLE CHILDREN
AND WE KNOW WHAT WE WANT
AND THE FUTURE IS CERTAIN
GIVE US TIME TO WORK IT OUT

We're on a trail to nowhere
Come on inside
Takin' that hike to nowhere
We'll take that hike

Feelin' okay this mornin'
And you know,
We're on the trail to paradise
Here we go, here we go

We're on a hike to nowhere
Come on inside
Takin' that hike to nowhere
We'll take that hike

Maybe you wonder where you are
I don't care
Here is where time is on our side
Take you there...take you there

We're on a trail to nowhere
We're on a trail to nowhere
We're on a trail to nowhere

There's a mountain in my mind
Come along and take that hike
and it's all right, baby, it's all right

And it's very far away
But it's growing day by day
And it's all right, baby, it's all right

Would you like to come along
and you could help me sing this song?
And it's all right, baby, it's all right

They can tell you what to do
But they'll make a fool of you
And it's all right, baby, it's all right
[x2]

We're on a trail to nowhere

King of the World
by Sam Bush

High on the hill, Valley below me

Blue sky above me, My dreams are so real

i could not hear, the hum of the highway

Drums of the foundry, pounding out steel

----------

Didn't Need nobody, Didn't need no time

I Didn't need nothing but my own peace of mind, You know that

a Voice like a whisper is bound to be heard

Just for one moment I'm the King ofthe World

Just for one moment I'm the King ofthe World

----------------

So I closed my eyes, at the powers beneath me

Cause the real world can't free me, from this dirty old town

Where the four winds blow, I set my troubles rolling

Since the world kept on turning I just let it go round

----------
See I took it all in like time takes forever

Like a dream that you never believe would come true

Then I gave it away I just had to surrender

Man I just can't remember when I felt so good

I second lilredmg's mention of "How great Thou art". It truely speaks to the granduer of Gods creation.

Some others I'd second for trail music (though I have yet to listen to tunes on the trail):

Allman Brothers, Blue Sky - this is fantastic
Allman Brothers, Jessica - no lyrics but I've always loved it as a driving song.
Doobie Brothers, Black Water

And lots of stuff by Simon & Garfunkel, Johnny Cash, James Taylor, CCR, Skynyrd, Neil Young, and Jethro Tull.

Oh, and Blues Traveler, The Mountians Win Again :D

"The Mountains Win Again" - Blues Traveller

I pick up my smile
Put it in my pocket
Hold it for a while
Try not to have to drop it
Men are not to cry
So how am I to stop it
Keep it all inside
Don't show how much she rocked ya

Ooh, can you feel the same?
Ooh, you gotta love the pain
Ooh, and it looks like rain, again
Ooh, I feel it comin' in
The mountains win again
Ah, the mountains win again

Dreams we dreamed at night
Were never meant to come to life
I can't understand
The ease she pulled away her hand
This time in my life
-I was hurt enough to care
I guess from now on
I'll be careful what I share

Oh, can you feel the same
Oh, you gotta love the pain
Yeah, and it looks like rain again
Yeah, I feel it comin' in
The mountains win again

A pocket is no place
For a smile anyway
Someday I will find
Love again will blow my mind
Maybe it will be
That love that got away from me
Is there a line to write
That could make you cry tonight

Can you feel the same?
Yeah, you gotta love the pain
Oh, and it looks like rain again
Oh, feel it comin' in
The mountains win again
Oh, the mountains win again
Win again
The mountains win again
Ooh

Can't You See was by Marshall Tucker.

Other lyrics:

I hope you never fear those mountains in the distance
Never settle for the path of least resistance
Living' might mean takin' chances but they're worth takin'
Lovin' might be a mistake but it's worth makin'

Don't let some hell bent heart leave you bitter
When you come close to sellin' out reconsider
Give the heavens above more than just a passing glance
And when you get the choice to sit it out or dance

I hope you dance
(I Hope You Dance - Lee Ann Womack)

Go for a walk, say a little prayer
Take a deep breath of mountain air
(My List - Toby Keith)

And I wouldn't be a Ragamuffin if I didn't quote Rich Mullins:

Down at Johnson's Creek the trees grow tall
Like a man who feeds his soul on your word
And I can look in the water I can see the stars fall
Hear the fires crackle and the crickets chirp
And there are bluffs on the banks of the Cumberland
Where I can see the sun rise from a world away
And I can see the marvelous things that you have done
In this beautiful world that you have made

Well in the winter it's white, in the summer it's green
In the fall it's orange and red and gold
And it comes alive in the rites of Spring
When the rivers thaw and the flowers unfold
And there are beads of dew on a spider's web
And there are motes of dust in these beams of light
We who are bone and spittle and muscle and sweat
We live together in a world where it's good to be alive.

'Cause it flutters and floats, it falls and it climbs,
it spins and sputters and spurts
And you filled this world with wonders 'round every turn
And it buzzes and beeps and shimmeys and shines
It rattles and patters and purrs
You filled this world with wonders and I'm filled
with the wonder of your world.

If there's a better world and a brighter day
even brighter than the one we're in
We'd be fools to think that it could be made
by the wills and hands of foolish men
So Lord to you we give your deepest praise
and to you we sing our loudest songs
and while we live in the world that you have made
we hear it whisper of the world that is to come.

This is really a song from the ADKs but I think of it often when I am on the trail...

We Belong to the Mountains

There's a lesson I'm learning from these old towering trees.
How to change with the seasons, how to bend in the breeze.
There's a season of rest and a season to grow.
There's a season of color and a season of snow.

We belong to the mountains; we were born on the breeze.
We learn how to dance from the swaying of trees.
Learn to be free from a swift-moving stream.
They give us their wisdom; we give them our dreams.

These mountains are ancient, these mountains are strong.
Their music will heal us if we'll sing along.
Wind in the willows; bird in the air,
Have stories to tell us and a song we can share.

We belong to the mountains; we were born on the breeze.
We learn how to dance from the swaying of trees.
Learn to be free from a swift-moving stream.
They give us their wisdom, we give them our dreams.

Did you ever count stars on a clear summer's night?
Our sun is just one of many in sight.
We are so small in this grand universe.
It makes me feel grateful for my time on this earth.

We belong to the mountains; we were born on the breeze.
We learn how to dance from the swaying of trees.
Learn to be free from a swift moving stream.
They give us their wisdom; we give them our dreams.

They give us their wisdom; we give them our dreams. . . By: Peggy Ayres & friends

Going through my CDs this last weekend I found a new hiking appropriate song to add to this list.

"Sleeping Bag" by ZZ Top

When it’s cold outside and you want to sleep in
Go for a pallet that’s so nice and thin.
Zip it on around while it’s on the ground,
Spread it out and lay it on down.
Slip inside my sleeping bag,
Slip inside my sleeping bag.

You’re afraid of the dark, baby, no need to be shy.
We’ll talk about some lovin’ while we look at the sky.
Don’t be hesitating, it’ll be alright,
We’ll tuck it in until it’s clean out of sight.
Slip inside my sleeping bag,
Slip inside my sleeping bag.

Let’s go out to egypt ’cause it’s in the plan,
Sleep beside the pharoahs in the shifting sand.
We’ll look at some pyramids and check out some heads.
Oh, we’ll whip out our mattress ’cause there ain’t no beds.
Slip inside my sleeping bag,
Slip inside my sleeping bag.

to the tune of God Bless America, with apologies to Irving Berlin:

I'm an AT thru-hi-i-ker,
And a purist at that
Following the white blaze through the trail maze
Thru the night with a light on my hat

From Springer Mountain, to the Prezzies,
To Katahdin, white with ice,
God Bless my shelter-home, where e'er the sun sets.
And God Bless the shelter mice, my home's sweet pets

LONG AS I CAN SEE THE LIGHT (J.C. Fogerty)

Put a candle in the window, 'cause I feel I've got to move.
Though I'm going, going, I'll be coming home soon,
'Long as I can see the light.
Pack my bag and let's get movin', 'cause I'm bound to drift a while.
When I'm gone, gone, you don't have to worry long,
'Long as I can see the light.
Guess I've got that old trav'lin' bone, 'cause this feelin' won't leave me alone.
But I won't, won't be losin' my way, no, no
'Long as I can see the light.
Yeah! Yeah! Yeah! Oh, Yeah!
Put a candle in the window, 'cause I feel I've got to move.
Though I'm going, going, I'll be coming home soon,

Long as I can see the light.
Long as I can see the light.
Long as I can see the light.
Long as I can see the light.
Long as I can see the light.

Wish that I was on ol' Rocky Top
Down in the Tennessee Hills
Ain't no smoggy smoke on Rocky Top
Ain't no telephone bills

Once I had a girl on Rocky Top
Half bear the other half cat
Wild as a mink but sweet as soda pop
I still dream about that

Chorus
Rocky Top you'll always be
Home sweet home to me
Good old Rocky Top, Rocky Top Tennessee
Rocky Top Tennesseee

Once two strangers climbed ol' Rocky Top
Lookin' for a moonshine still
Strangers ain't come down from Rocky Top
Reckon they never will

Corn won't grow at all on Rocky Top
Dirt's too rocky by far
That's why all the folks on Rocky Top
Get their corn from a jar

Chorus

I've had years of cramped up city life
Trapped like a duck in a pen
All I know is it's a pity life
Can't be simple again

Of Wolf and Man

Off through the new day's mist I run
off from the new day's mist I have come
I hunt
therefore I am
harvest the land
taking of the fallen lamb

off thruogh the new day's mist I run
off from the new day'smist I have come
we shift
pulsing with the earth
company we keep
roaming the land while you sleep

shape shift, nose to the wind
shape shift, feeling I've been
move swift, all senses clean
earth's gift, back to the meaning of life

bright is the moon high in starlight
chill is the air cold as steel tonight
we shift
call of the wild
fear in your eyes
it's later than you realized

shape shift, nose to the wind
shape shift, feeling I've been
move swift, all senses clean
earth's gift, back to the meaning of life

I feel I change
back to a better day
hair stands on the back of my neck
in wildness is the preservation of the world

so seek the wolf in thyself

shape shift, nose to the wind
shape shift, feeling I've been
move swift, all senses clean
earth's gift, back to the meaning of wolf and man</pre>

When it's a real cold morning, or the first sunny day in a while, I feel compelled to belt out the Beatles' "Good Day, Sunshine" (much to the chagrin of my hiking buddy). I also enjoy singing "A Thousand Miles from Nowhere" by Dwight Yoakam

A Thousand Miles from Nowhere

I'm a thousand miles from nowhere
Time don't matter to me
'Cause I'm a thousand miles from nowhere
And there's no place I want to be

I got heartaches in my pocket
I got echoes in my head
And all that I keep hearing
Are the cruel, cruel things that you said

I'm a thousand miles from nowhere
Time don't matter to me
'Cause I'm a thousand miles from nowhere
And there's no place I want to be

Oh, I
Oh, I
Oh, I yeah

Instrumental

Oh, I
Oh, I
Oh, I yeah

I got bruises on my memory
I got tear stains on my hands
And in the mirror there's a vision
Of what used to be a man

I'm a thousand miles from nowhere
Time don't matter to me
'Cause I'm a thousand miles from nowhere
And there's no place I want to be

I'm a thousand miles from nowhere
Time don't matter to me
'Cause I'm a thousand miles from nowhere
And there's no place I want to be

Instrumental
Oh, I

I'm a thousand miles from nowhere...

Good day sunshine
Good day sunshine
Good day sunshine

I need to laugh, and when the sun is out
I've got something I can laugh about
I feel good, in a special way
I'm in love and it's a sunny day

Good day sunshine
Good day sunshine
Good day sunshine

We take a walk, the sun is shining down
Burns my feet as they touch the ground

Good day sunshine
Good day sunshine
Good day sunshine

Then we lie beneath a shady tree
I love her and she's loving me
She feels good, she know she's looking fine
I'm so proud to know that she is mine

Good day sunshine
Good day sunshine
Good day sunshine
Good day sunshine
Good day sunshine
Good day sunshine
Good day sunshine
Good day sunshine

When ever I'm on the trail I start singing this song. It's a traditional song with some new lyrics thrown in by Woody GuthrieThe recorded version I know is Joan Baez with Pete Seeger off of "Very Early Joan", but they don't sing these exact lyrics - here are the ones I get in my head:

You gotta walk that lonesome valley
You gotta walk it by yourself
Nobody here can walk it for you
You gotta walk it by yourself

Jesus walked that lonesome valley
He had to walk it by himself
O nobody else could walk it for him
He had to walk it by himself

You must go and stand your trial
You have to stand it by yourself
O nobody else can stand it for you
You ahve to stand it by yourself

There's a road that leads to glory
Thru a valley far away
Nobody else can walk it for you
They can only point the way

Mammy and Daddy loves you dearly
Sister does & brother too
They may beg you to go with them
But they cannot go for you

I'm gonna walk that lonesome valley
I'm gonna walk it by myself
Don't want nobody to walk it for me
I'm gonna walk it by myself

Now tho' the road be rough and rocky
And the hills be steep & high
We can sing as we go marching
And we'll win that one big union by & by

"There is a place I like to go
In the spring, in the fall and in the snow
There's lots of friendly people there
And you don't have to bother to cut your hair.

The Smokey Mountains is the place
To put a big smile on your face
The trees are yellow, red and green
It's the prettiest place I've ever seen.

No telephones to blow your high
Nothin' but clean air in the sky
I think that heaven must be near
Cause the angels' voices you can hear...

It is the natural habitat
For people who know just where it's at
Smokin' is their claim to fame
And that's how the Smokies got their name."

(With appolgies to Willie and his song On the Road Again.)

On the Trail Again:

On the trail again
I can't wait to get on the trail again
The life I love is hiking with my friends
And I can't wait to get on the trail again
On the trail again
Going places that I have never been
Seeing things that I may never see again
And I cant wait to get on the trail again

On the trail again
Like a band of gypsies we head down the trailway
We're the best of friends
Insisting that the world is turning our way
And our way
Is on the trail again
I can't wait to get on the trail again
The life I love is hiking with my friends
And I can't wait to get on the trail again

"Sometimes by Step" by Rich Mullins

Sometimes the night was beautiful
Sometimes the sky was so far away
Sometimes it seemed to stoop so close
You could touch it but your heart would break
Sometimes the morning came too soon
Sometimes the day could be so hot
There was so much work left to do
But so much You'd already done

CHORUS:
Oh God, You are my God
And I will ever praise You
Oh God, You are my God
And I will ever praise You
I will seek You in the morning
And I will learn to walk in Your ways
And step by step You'll lead me
And I will follow You all of my days

Sometimes I think of Abraham
How one star he saw had been lit for me
He was a stranger in this land
And I am that, no less than he
And on this road to righteousness
Sometimes the climb can be so steep
I may falter in my steps
But never beyond Your reach

CHORUS

And I will follow You all of my days
And I will follow You all of my days
And step by step You'll lead me
And I will follow You all of my days
And I will follow You all of my days
(Sometimes the night was beautiful)
And I will follow You all of my days

MoBeach I think your right, I think there are lyrics but I'm used to hearing these tunes as instrumentals. Sometimes when hiking I hear them for hours (in my head), don't need no stinkin MP3 player!:D Earworm indeed.

I never seem to get tired of both tunes. Something about the jaunty melody combined with the primitive sound of clawhammer banjo+fiddle really brings out the spirit of the Appalachians to me, at least as I've known it all of my life, YMMV.

Have a great time March 12th, I was on Springer this past weekend and ranged up as far as Hightower Gap. Was windy and cold but beautiful, man was it nice to be out again this time of year! :sun

I just heard an "Oldie but a Goodie" on my new XM radio. There's a station on there called "Deep Tracks" that plays classic rock that you RARELY if EVER hear on commercial radio. I'd given up on classic rock years ago. This dang thing has me listening with new ears.

Here tis;

Sandman by America

Ain’t it foggy outside
All the planes have been grounded
Ain’t the fire inside?
Let’s all go stand around it
Funny, I’ve been there
And you’ve been here
And we ain’t had no time to drink that beer

’cause I understand you’ve been running from the man
That goes by the name of the sandman
He flies the sky like an eagle in the eye
Of a hurricane that’s abandoned

Ain’t the years gone by fast
I suppose you have missed them
Oh, I almost forgot to ask
Did you hear of my enlistment?

Funny, I’ve been there
And you’ve been here
And we ain’t had no time to drink that beer

’cause I understand you’ve been running from the man
That goes by the name of the sandman
He flies the sky like an eagle in the eye
Of a hurricane that’s abandoned

I understand you’ve been running from the man
That goes by the name of the sandman
He flies the sky like an eagle in the eye
Of a hurricane that’s abandoned

My mind is racing and my feet are moving slow
I look around me don't see anything I know
I'd like to answer you but I can't clarify
If I'm 100 miles ahead or 100 miles behind.

It's gonna rain, it's gonna pour
Through sickness and worse can I love more
You carried me when I fell
Can I carry you, can I love that well

My mind is racing and I'm sorry if it hurts
I've never been someplace that I cannot reverse
If I don't wonder, if I don't take my time
Am I 100 miles ahead or 100 miles behind

It's gonna rain it's gonna pour
Through sickness and worse can I love more
You carried me when I fell
Can I carry you, can I love that well

Miles from Nowhere

Cat Stevens

Miles from nowhere, guess I’ll take my time,
Oh yeah, to reach there. Look up at the
mountain I have to climb, oh yeah, to reach there.
Lord my body has been a good friend, but I won’t
need it when I reach the end. Miles from nowhere,
guess I’ll take my time, oh yeah, to reach there.
I creep through the valleys, and I grope
through the woods, ‘cause I know when I find it
it’s gonna make me feel good. Yes, I
love everything, so don’t it make you feel sad
Cause I’ll drink to you, my baby,
I’ll think to that.
Miles from nowhere, not a soul in sight
Oh yeah, but it’s alright. I have my freedom,
I can make my own rules, oh yeah, the ones that I choose.
Lord my body has been a good friend,
but I won’t need it when I reach the end.
I love everything, so don’t it make you feel sad
Cause I’ll drink to you, my baby, I’ll think to that.
I’ll think to that, I’ll think to that.
Miles from nowhere, guess I’ll take my time,
Oh yeah, to reach there.

=================================
Creedence Cleerwater Revival

Long as I remember The rain been comin' down.
Clouds of myst'ry pourin' Confusion on the ground.
Good men through the ages, Tryin' to find the sun;

"Shelter From The Storm"

I was in another lifetime one of toil and blood
When blackness was a virtue and the road was full of mud
I came in from the wilderness a creature void of form
"Come in" she said
"I'll give you shelter from the storm".

And if I pass this way again you can rest assured
I'll always do my best for her on that I give my word
In a world of steel-eyed death and men who are fighting to be warm
"Come in" she said
"I'll give you shelter from the storm".

Not a word was spoke between us there was little risk involved
Everything up to that point had been left unresolved
Try imagining a place where it's always safe and warm
"Come in" she said
"I'll give you shelter from the storm".

I was burned out from exhaustion buried in the hail
Poisoned in the bushes and blown out on the trail
Hunted like a crocodile ravaged in the corn
"Come in" she said
"I'll give you shelter from the storm".

Suddenly I turned around and she was standing there
With silver bracelets on her wrists and flowers in her hair
She walked up to me so gracefully and took my crown of thorns
"Come in" she said
"I'll give you shelter from the storm".

Now there's a wall between us something there's been lost
I took too much for granted got my signals crossed
Just to think that it all began on a long-forgotten morn
"Come in" she said
"I'll give you shelter from the storm".

Well the deputy walks on hard nails and the preacher rides a mount
But nothing really matters much it's doom alone that counts
And the one-eyed undertaker he blows a futile horn
"Come in" she said
"I'll give you shelter from the storm".
I've heard newborn babies wailing like a mourning dove
And old men with broken teeth stranded without love
Do I understand your question man is it hopeless and forlorn
"Come in" she said
"I'll give you shelter from the storm".

In a little hilltop village they gambled for my clothes
I bargained for salvation and they gave me a lethal dose
I offered up my innocence and got repaid with scorn
"Come in" she said
"I'll give you shelter from the storm".

Well I'm living in a foreign country but I'm bound to cross the line
Beauty walks a razor's edge someday I'll make it mine
If I could only turn back the clock to when God and her were born
"Come in" she said
"I'll give you shelter from the storm".

On the first part of the journey
I was looking at all the life
There were plants and birds and rocks and things
There was sand and hills and rings
The first thing I met was a fly with a buzz
And the sky with no clouds
The heat was hot and the ground was dry
But the air was full of sound

I've been through the desert on a horse with no name
It felt good to be out of the rain
In the desert you can remember your name
'Cause there ain't no one for to give you no pain
La, la ...

After two days in the desert sun
My skin began to turn red
After three days in the desert fun
I was looking at a river bed
And the story it told of a river that flowed
Made me sad to think it was dead

You see I've been through the desert on a horse with no name
It felt good to be out of the rain
In the desert you can remember your name
'Cause there ain't no one for to give you no pain
La, la ...

After nine days I let the horse run free
'Cause the desert had turned to sea
There were plants and birds and rocks and things
there was sand and hills and rings
The ocean is a desert with it's life underground
And a perfect disguise above
Under the cities lies a heart made of ground
But the humans will give no love

You see I've been through the desert on a horse with no name
It felt good to be out of the rain
In the desert you can remember your name
'Cause there ain't no one for to give you no pain
La, la ...

"Big Yellow Taxi"

They paved paradise
And put up a parking lot
With a pink hotel, a boutique
And a swinging hot SPOT
Don't it always seem to go
That you don't know what you've got
‘Til it's gone
They paved paradise
And put up a parking lot

They took all the trees
And put them in a tree museum
Then they charged the people
A dollar and a half just to see 'em
Don't it always seem to go,
That you don't know what you've got
‘Til it's gone
They paved paradise
And put up a parking lot

Hey farmer, farmer
Put away that DDT now
Give me spots on my apples
But LEAVE me the birds and the bees
Please!
Don't it always seem to go
That you don't know what you've got
‘Til its gone
They paved paradise
And put up a parking lot

Late last night
I heard the screen door slam
And a big yellow taxi
Come and took away my old man
Don't it always seem to go
That you don't know what you've got
‘Til it's gone
They paved paradise
And put up a parking lot

I said
Don't it always seem to go
That you don't know what you've got
‘Til it's gone
They paved paradise
And put up a parking lot

They paved paradise
And put up a parking lot
They paved paradise
And put up a parking lot

Anybody else got any song lyrics that remind you of something about the AT?

I didn't see this song mentioned yet.

This song specifically mentions the AT in the first verse.
From the Boss > Outlaw Pete (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U7336qS5Rfs) <cool vid

He was born a little baby on the Appalachian Trail
At six months old he'd done three months in jail
He robbed a bank in his diapers and his little bare baby feet
All he said was "Folks, my name is Outlaw Pete."
I'm Outlaw Pete!
I'm Outlaw Pete!
Can you hear me?
