Can I just run a bleach solution through it or have I ruined it?

first use hot water, then use a hot vinegar/water (white vinegar/water 50/50), then if still dirty use a MILD bleach solution. Scrub all parts as much as possible. Some staning is irreversible but not damaging.

==============================

From experience ...the element is moslt likely toast but the body of the filter can be safely soaked in a mild bleach solution and then WELL rinsed before it is used again.

Ironically, that is the main reason I don't carry them any more.

Don't use bleach unless you are tired of those pesky gaskets. You will go from musty to BLACK and leaks will abound.

Learn the lesson and replace the filter, remove it after a trip and let it air dry.

Or the other lesson and forget about water treatment.
