My wife just ordered me a North Face Cat's Meow 2008 model for my upcoming birthday! Got it from BaseGear.com for $134.40

Can't wait for my April week-long 70 mile section hike now, with new Sierra Designs Lightning tent, new trekking poles, new Marmot Precip jacket, new BA Dual Core mattress, and a few other new items. I feel almost completely re-outfitted! All the new vs. old gear will knock about 12 lbs off my pack weight too! Yee hah! :) :) :)

We just did the same thing this year. It's nice having packweight shed and the back spared. :)

I got a Cats Meow in 1985 and it is still my favorite bag.

Great! Enjoy it. My son loved his Cat's Meow too. (older version from Campor)

I still use one from 1982 in our car camping supplies.

I'm real proud of my wife, who knows little about hiking/camping gear. She did hours of research (count that as added love :) ), and after looking around at the competition a bit myself, it seems the NF Cat's Meow is one of the lightest 20* synthetic bags around, and it received BPB's coveted award in 2006, and their 2008 model (which mine is) writeup is very positive.

We are on our 13th anniversary honeymoon right now, and stayed in Maggie Valley two nights and today hiked the Alum Cave Trail in GSMNP. Had a great time! I got a chance to try out my new Komperdell poles, although with only a day pack, but they were cool. ;)

Gonna be going on a new gear shake down weekend hike very soon, ahead of my 70-miler 2 months from now. Can't wait!

Doc has an older North Face Cat's Meow bag, too. He likes it, but is looking to get a new bag this year. I think he's looking at going with a Mountain Hardwear UltraLamina 15* bag. I'm looking at upgrading too, but will probably be changing to a Ray-Way quilt. :D

The Lightning is a great tent. I have one. I am looking for something with a smaller footprint for solo.

I may just get a hubba. I like double walled.

The Hubba looks cool if you are OK with not having a lot of space. I like to have room for my stuff and still room to move around if tent-bound in camp due to rain or severe cold. I like to sit up in my thermarest chair w/BA Dual Core pad inside.

But then I'm not one who hikes 'til dark, eats, crashes, and hits the trail at the crack of light either. I like to get in my 10-12 miles early (3pm or so) and enjoy camping too. Of course that's my section hiking mentality. Would be much more mileage focused if doing a thru. ;)

Does the Cats Meom have down fill?

No, it's the newest technology in synthetic, called ClimashieldŽ Prism. It's a 20* bag weighing 2 lbs 14 ozs. There are comparable NF down bags with different names.

no it's synthetic, but I love mine... I've had mine since 01 and it's great

Maybe I missed this in the thread, but what's the difference between the 2008 and the older Cat's Meow? Campmor has the older version for $119 but if the 2008 is worth the few extra dollars, I'll get it instead.

Here's a BPM (Backpacker Magazine) article about the changes:

Not that I need to say this, but the best thing about having the most popular synthetic bag ever is....Your zipper matches that of other trail bunnies, with the cat's walk. 5 years of cozy sleeping.

The reviews?

Big grain of salt with those.
