When I hiked the Smokies in 2006, I didn't find the Nat'l Geographic map very useful. I was particularly disappointed with the elevation profile all cramed into such a small rectangle. Is the only map for the Smokies? Is there a way to obtain a better elevation profile at least? I was hoping to find something better for this year.

You can purchase an inexpensive topo map from the GSNP website...www.nps.gov.
One I use is waterproof from Earthwalk Press, sells for around $7 to $9 plus shipping.

The Great Smoky Mountains Natural History Association has a book which includes a profile of each trail. Mine's an old copy which I bought used, but it has lots of good information about each trail as well as the profile. I'm assuming a Google search would turn up a source.

OutrageGIS has produced some maps of the smokies, you can get them here (http://www.outragegis.com/store/home.php). There Red River Gorge ones are nice, espeically if you are using a GPS unit.
