Is Black Gap shelter in between the start of the approach trail and Springer Mtn shelter? I don't want to pay the money to stay at the Hostel on the first night but I don't want to go all the way to the Springer mtn shelter. Help!

yeah it's 7.3 miles north of the visitors center. might as well continue on to springer

So theoretically I have to hike 12ish miles if I don't want to pay one hundred dollars to sleep but want to stay at the hostel? That's **itty!

no. there's a shelter 100 yards from the visitors center that's free. also there's tons of free camping just a couple of miles up the approach trail
12 miles? the approach is only 8.8
