Discounting any spouse or current significant other - what current or historic figure would you choose to hike the Appalachian Trail with.
I imagine some folks would have more than one choice. And if you could choose a group, who would you hike with?

Moses and the jews. They went on an unsupported thru (well, unsupported by men anyway) for forty years. And Moses may have slackpacked to the top of the mountain, but, he was fully loaded when he came down. Top that.

For me, if I was to select a family member, it would be my son or my Papaw, who passed on his love for the outdoors to his sons and his grandsons before he died. If I had to pick an historical figure, I'd have to say I'd want to hike with the Dalai Lama. :D

It sounds like you have been at my breakfast table already! I love the answers I have heard over the years. I did have to insist on "non-conjugal" hiking partners. No guy could convince me he wanted to hike with Brittany for the great conversation!

I always hike alone because I am slow, stubborn and I wheeze too much to talk and I tend to hike a little between my breaks. Makes me a difficult hiking partner. But always though Robin Williams would be fun to hike with.

I hike with my brother. He is my hero...and my food sherpa and the food bag is big and heavy. He claims my pack is just air, because I have converted to so much lighter weight gear. I point out to him that my pack weight is proportional to his in terms of body weight - he has me by about 30 pounds. He points out to me that he is always carrying me. Such brotherly love.

What a cool question.

I guess my father doesn't really count as a "historical" figure.

So in terms of dead people, I wouldn't mind hiking with Ernest Shackleton, T.E. Lawrence, or Richard Burton (the Victorian explorer, not the actor).

Live people:

Well, John McCain would be great company. He's a great story-teller, has a fine sense of humor, and would never whine.

Other great company?

I dunno. Scarlett Johansson . And she could whine all she wanted.

other than him any one of the early explorer types would be pretty neat-

Hmm, Maybe Kirby is Frodo on his quest to vanquish all that is evil in the land of Mordor. By tossing the pebble from Springer into the fires of Katahdin, Frodo shall silence all evil, so that men may once again rule middle earth without fear and WB members will rejoice and be free and show each other more kindness than meanness and drink beer.

First of all, excluding spouses does not affect my decision in the least. My hubby would be the LAST person I'd take on a thru-hike. Nice guy, but he's an indoor boy. He drives me insane whenever we try to camp together. The last time we were out together, he woke me up at 2:00 a.m. from a comfy sleep. He was all in a panic and wanted me to know that it was raining outside. Gaargh.

OK, so if I could thru hike with someone from history I think I'd want to go with Pope John Paul II and Katharine Hepburn.

You wouldn't want to hike with the dude from Mensa. I tried hiking with my daughter and three of her friends. They are all members. Mostly a pain in the rear.

Oh gosh, a few years back I was asked to set up hikes for a day-hiking weekend for what seemed like an innocent-sounding outdoor group from a large Eastern metro area. Might as well have been Mensa. I think the least formally educated among them "only" had a PhD. That bunch was more self absorbed than a pallet-load of new silica gel. They had internet directions to each trailhead which they used to dispute the trailhead directions field verified by a week-long hiking convention in the area not a year before. On the trail they constantly one-upped each other with tales of hiking obscrure destinations in Europe and Asia. And for gratitude they made me pay a full "share" for food they brought that I was severely allergic to and didn't eat - they hadn't thought to mention to us beforehand they shared meals and costs.

reading some of the choices, i think you would be better off having a dinner party than a hiking trip. john prine??? i mean, great music, but from interviews ive seen with the guy he would tell you to **** off and sit down on a rock within a mile.

i would pick:
merriwether lewis with his trusty pike to take the point
daniel boone to watch how the man moves thru the woods
teddy roosevelt and davy crocket for their stories
a young george washington to watch a great man as he is being formed.
and andrew jackson just to spite the others.

A famous mountaineer and veteran of the 10th Mountain Division. He ran the Sierra Club in the 50s and early 60s. His proudest achievement with Sierra Club was losing their tax exempt status for lobbying aggressively to protect the Grand Canyon and Dinosaur Nat'l Monument from hydroelectric dams. Was instrumental in the passage of the Wilderness Act of 1964. He also founded a number of environmental organizations.

do you realize how much you belittle or waterdown the ugly evil of the actual nazis when you call anybody you disagee with nazis?????
dr. laura schlessinger's political views involve everyone conforming to her type of american. pretty similar in ideology to nazism. see, what you fail to see, is that nazi-like ideology is rampant in the world. hitler was the only political figure able to implement such ideology through the form of a state. fascism is by no means unique to Nazism. do you realize how much you maximize the possibility of fascism returning by refusing to see commonalities with nazism and contemporary ideologues?

Hey Whitefoot, give Tin Man, and the rest of us a break.

You ask him if he likes Nazis.

Yet the FIRST person you mention that you'd want to hike with (see Post #161 above) is Adolf Hitler. Yes, because he mixed with the others would provide entertainment. i did not say i liked him.

Why don't you think a minute about the content of your own posts before slamming anyone else's.

that is your take on her political views. and we all know about opinions.
besides, you didnt call her a fascist, which she may well be for all i know...you called her a nazi. see, nazis were real. they did horrible horrible things. anyone calling themselves a nazi today is taking on that mantle of evil.
anyone you call a nazi today you are asserting is a proponent of and supports those evils.
while i dont know much about laura schlessinger....other than she took a nice topless photo when she was younger....i doubt she is publicly endorsing the reign of terror that was the nazis.
admit it, it was a flippant, throwaway line that is indefensible.
if you dont agree with me, then you sir are worse than hitler

Dawntreader, you should probably take York, Tobey may be a little sore, with the whippings and all.

But I have decided, I'll take Mitch Hedberg, it would be classic to see him tripping on the acid and running from Smackey the Frog, or Smokey the Bear, whichever forest fire prevention representative should happen to show up.

Wow,
Unbelievable error... Tobey hahaha.. Thats the dude in roots right?? haha.. I was on my Lavar Burton discussion, and... oh well, no excuses.. York is his name, dancin' for natives was his game...

Favorite Mitch Hedberg line.. "Waffles are like pancakes, with little syrup traps."

Tom Brokaw
Wyatt Earp
Dainel Day Lewis
Alan Alda

I would like to hike with Les Stroud (Survivorman) as long as he keeps that harmonica tucked away when I'm trying to sleep. As far as a hiking group ... I'd say that any type of mongol hoard would suffice (though they usually have ponies with them so that would probably mean - I'll be using pack stock) my second coice of groups to hike with would probably be the Orks or Uruk-hai's from any of the Lord of the Rings trilogies - just for sheer stamina and dedication. :D

There are a lot of controversial people listed in this thread, but one that I will comment on is Alan Alda. In the early years of MASH, he was funny. Then he gained control of the show and turned it into a moralistic sermon. I really liked him in the early years and wanted to meet him, but I learned to dislike him later. Good actor, yes, fun to meet, maybe not as much as you might think. I fear he would get all pompous and preachy on a hike. YMMV.

In Jamie Farr's words:

[Working with Alan Alda] If I wanted a sermon I'd go to church. He just wouldn't quit. He just kept adding more speeches and more moralistic stuff. After he got famous, he got really pompous. He started thinking he was speaking God's words - not the lines in the script, not his own personal thoughts. He thought he was speaking the words of God. I think he thought and believed that God was speaking through him. A person like that is not easy to be around.
