March 1st is on Saturday this year.Any projection in number of how many will start north this day :-? ???

I am number 9,589.
I have looked around the net for a number for you but have not found anything. It is a lot....... at least I will be able to eat good off the crap people leave behind when they decide that hiking is not for them!

Seriously. I started 3/1. The hiker box should be OVERFLOWING with food at NEELS gap hostel. No need for a drop at all.

Awww, it ain't that bad Fitz. Both of our "snowstorms" were in April! The first 2 weeks of March were some of the best weather in all of 03.

I feel a cold (or unpredictably erratic) March coming on this year, not on any scientific basis of course, just a feeling.

Looks like weather at Springer is around 30 - 32 degrees, perfect hiking weather - keeps you warm while hiking but not hot enough to get you all stinky from sweating!!! Cant wait, 9 more days!
By chance, I just happened to have finished counting how many people on the 2008 thru-hike list here gave March 1 for their start date.
27, not including people starting "March", "early March", "March 1-10", or Feb 29.

I don't know if I want to start so soon. I think the weather will be pretty cold and overall bad for hiking during March, but then again I am in Michigan so don't go by me.

Completing riga's thought:
1 Mar = 26 (took one off)
1-10 Mar = 4
early Mar = 9
Mar = 10
28/29 Feb = 3
So that is 'only' 52 within a week or so:eek:...(it was probably easier for me to count since I can sort the list:D).

Damn, I'm with ya, man. I wish I had the time for a thru-hike. Oh, well, I guess I should be happy with what I'm getting this summer!
Maybe I'll run into some of ya around Roan Mt during my 4/18 week hike, unless you blaze past that area before then! :)

Funny, I headed out there today to get some paper work done...... my badge has already been deactivated! I got through the gates and then tried to go through the inner check points the computer busted me!
They didnt tell me me at the debrief that the badge would be pulled - I even told them I needed to get back in before leaving. Oh well - they can deal with the headache now....... I'm going hiking :banana!!
