When I hike, whether it's a simple 8 mile day hike, an overnighter, or several days on the trail, there are 3 things that are always with me:
At least one liter of water
At least one Snickers bar
At least 2 Advil tablets
Those things would be "per day" for a multi-day hike.
So what do you never leave home without??

if the list was longer, there are some other things i would not want to be without: sleeping bag, shoes, pants and shirt (fleece), water bottle, cell phone, sil-shelter (sorry that's now 10 essentials and not what you asked for)

sense of where I have been (my experiences guide what I need),
and sense of humor (in case one or both of the above fail me).

2) One liter of water, minimun

On a day hike, I always carry a map, compass, and cigarette lighter.
Also a jacket, rain shell, and whistle.
Honestly, there are far more than three things I ALWAYS carry.
In winter I also carry a very warm jacket and bivy in case I break my leg while hiking alone, AND a cell phone.
It's nice to have a metal container to heat water in in very cold conditions. Hot beverages can keep your core temp. up while someone is looking for you.

??????? :-?
When I go for my daily hike, I don't take anything... Just me and my shoes. Now if I do more than 6 miles I'll carry water and a snack. My husband and I have big discussions about that. He wants me to carry a cellphone and spray (for dogs). No Way!
