As far as I know, the maps CD Cuffs mentioned are the only ones (for the US) that work with Garmin.

http://www8.garmin.com/cartography/mapSource/topous.jsp

It covers the whole US, AK and HI on 3 CDs.

Well worth it.

For just route planning, this set by Nat'l Geographic

http://www.natgeomaps.com/topo_georgia

contains all the USGS topo maps for AL-GA-FL interlinked. THree CDs, but there is a way to put them on your hard drive so that you don't have to swap out when planning a route that crosses CD coverage (like the Pinhoti Trail).

These maps are more detailed in elevation contours than Mapsource, and contain the man-made obejects the USGS maps have. They are great for detailed route planning. You can make a waypoint route on them and transfer it (using EASY GPS or similar) to your Garmin and see the route on mapsource.
