I am hiking in last June heading north form bears den Va. and I'm not sure what the temp is going to be at night. Having said that I'm wondering what hikers like to use in the summer time.

A fleece "sleeping bag" and a light fleece hoodie pullover is all I need for most summer nights in that locale. More often than not it's uncomfortably warm till about 11-12 PM then cool (60's) in the AM. I find that extra clothing is easier to regulate than a real sleeping bag.
Mountain Hardwear Phantom 45. A hair over a pound, compresses to about the size of a cantaloupe.
I bought the mummy style; but, they seem to have discontinued their availability for some time now. However, I've used this in the summer with satifactory results. A little heavier than the MH Phantom 45, but, I'll wager a lot less expensive.

I really like my EMS Velocity 35. Very compressible, 25 oz.

I've slept at 11,500 ft, below freezing, under a tarp wearing poly pro long johns and using a silk liner. Was perfectly warm.
For summer camping I use a Marmot Trails (http://www.paragonsports.com/Paragon/Shop?DSP=40000&PCR=1:101:1012:10108:100434&IID=5006-2397&campaign=2570)sleeping bag. Weighs only 19oz, and has a full zip so I can open it like a blanket when it's warm or zip it up and cinch the drawstring if it gets a little cool. If I add a silk liner I can use it in the spring and fall too. Available for under $50 a few places...

I use a Pacific Crest Micron XTS 40F mummy bag in the warmer months ($29.00 at a local surplus store) and a no-name brand 20F synthetic mummy bag purchased on eBay (for $4 + shipping!) in cooler weather. The 40Fbag compresses to the size of a one liter waterbottle and the 20F a little bigger than a football. I always carry my REI fleece mummy liner to supplement, just in case. Weight is about a pound for each, plus the fleece. I wear a set of polypro to sleep in and a fleece balaclava if necessary. I treat them as delicately as I would a WM down bag and they've held up well.
marmot 40* synthetic bag. i think it is called the pounder? nice and light and very compressible.

I use this in the summer. Sometimes I have to wear extra clothes in it, but I already have the clothes, and the bag is cheap. Good for visiting friends, staying in cabins, etc.

That's a really good price. I wonder why they're closing out this model.... sigh.

I just lay on top of mine and cover with an article of clothing. It is just an extra layer of padding after a long day.
