Hypothetically, if you were to recieve a check, say for maybe $300 or $600 from your Uncle, what would you spend it on?

I think I'd buy a tank of gas and convert the left over $20 to Euros.

I'd put it in the bank for now to go with my other savings to spend on my next attempt of the AT. If my uncle would give me some more every year I'd have enough before long. It would be my luck he'd get liberal on me next year and not only not give me any more but want back what he's already gave me.:D

Yep, into savings it would go for now. Maybe for Paul Bunyan's graduation bash in May and some new furniture. :) I have enough hiking gear for now (but will be looking next year, esp for hubby. And a new down bag for me).

Oh I don't think you would have to worry about giving it back,,,unless by some chance your Aunt took control of the account. Sounds like a great way to spend the money though. When you go the next time are you starting SOBO or NOBO?

Probably NOBO but I'd like to do it SOBO also.

I think U should give it to me! I have a sure fire way to invest it that will quadruple your money in 3 short months. Of course, I can't guarantee any of this! My fee for doing this, is, however much money U give me!

It would make me wonder what ulterior motives my Uncle had. Was he trying to pay me off to get himself out of a bind?

Easy. Tarptent Squall, Marmot Precip jacket and pants. I was planning on buying the Precips next week and I'm waiting for my sewing maching to come out of the shop so I could finish my tarptent, but I'd blow all that off for some nice, American cash.

Or Australian, I'm not picky...

I would use it to pay off some of the bills remaining from having spent five weeks in Alaska last Spring and Summer. Believe me if you have a choice between a six month thru hike and six weeks in Alaska, choose the former if you are on a tight budget.

Well the gear head in me says:

MSR HUBBA-already have the hubba hubba
MSR GRAVITY FLOW FILTRATION SYSTEM
ICEBREAKER THERMALS
NEW PAIR OF CONVERTIBLE PANTS
2 PAIR OF DARN TOUGH SOCKS
ETC., ETC., ETC.

I think I'll stop now and snap into reality. I guess I'll just pay some bills off, *#^@ it!! :D

I'm thinking of going down to Mexico to climb a volcano or two, $600 from my uncle would help out on that trip. Although I don't quite think that is what he had in mind for the money.

I love those cowboys, I love their gold,
I loved my uncle, God rest his soul,
Taught me good, Lord, Taught me all I know
Taught me so well, I grabbed that gold
And I left his dead ass there by the side of the road.

Basically, your uncle borrowed the money from the neighbors to give to you and then gave the IOU to your kids and grand kids to pay back. Enjoy spending it.

Look folks we've already moved one of these threads to the subscription area because it went this route and became a discussion about taxes, not about hiking. The political discussions must stay off the hiking boards. Thank you for your co-operation in this matter. I will be moving the tax discussion portion of this thread to the other thread in the political area to get this thread back on the topic of hiking.

Yea you were actually were very nice about it. :sun I was hoping the thread would drift towards McCains dismal eviromental awareness and 0%voting record as it would affect us all as hikers but I guess that must be going on else where (hopefully) . ;)
