i am starting my thru on 3/16/08 and i have some buddies that are going to come up with me to do a send off hike. we were planning on hiking up from the forest service road to springer and then going from there. one option i thought about was hiking up to springer friday night and camping out. i was not sure how crowded up there it would be on friday night. any insight would be great.

It could be crowded. As long as you're tenting you should be fine.

The shelter is not bad and there are several good camping sites at Springer, good water, privy and cables. Sunset from the rock slab is most excellent. The next shelter will probably be full anyway. Relax and enjoy - take some time and read some of the register entries. No need to rush off and pile on the mileage the first day.

I will be at Springer on the 22nd for the tourist hiker thing, and to see a whole bunch of hikers off. 15th will be a bit busy, but to the last of March and beginning of April will get crowded,

not sure you are right about your dates though. if you leave march 16th, thats a sunday. unless you mean to zero at the shelter in that case i'll shut my face.

If it's anything like 3/7/06, there will be plenty of campsites available.

I was there 3/1/08 and there were plenty of tent sites. I didn't really go hang out by the shelter, too many people over there for me. Sunset is great, water close by and a place to hang your food. You also get to meet Many Sleeps. He's a really nice guy.
