View Full Version : Rock n' Roll Song for each of the 14 AT States

Survivor Dave

I'm looking for a(14) Hard driving, Rock n Roll songs for each State from Ga. to Maine.

As Sgt. Rock would say, I don't want any sissy dirtbag songs either.

Let's say from the mid sixties to the present. Explicit lyrics acceptable!

I realize Maine is probably a bit difficult along with some others, but a Trail city or something close to it would be really groovy man!

I'm all ears...........

'Jonas and Ezekiel' certainly seemed appropriate as a walked south out of Hanover.

"I left my anger in the river out on Highway 5
New Hampshire, Vermont bordered by
College farms, hubcaps and falling rocks
Voices in the woods and the mountaintops

I used to search the reservations and Native Lands
before I realized, everywhere I stand
there have been
Tribal feet runnin wild as fire
Some past life sister of my desire. . . . "

Let me re-phrase. I'd like to have the name of the State or city in the song. I am familiar with Primus, but haven't become a fan as of yet.Country rock and Southern rock to be included.

Or "Wagon wheel" By Old Crow Medicine Show
Headed down south to the land of the pines
And I'm thumbin' my way into North Caroline
Starin' up the road
And pray to God I see headlights......

Walkin' to the south out of Roanoke
I caught a trucker out of Philly
Had a nice long toke
But he's a headed west from the Cumberland Gap
To Johnson City, Tennessee
That's Tenn., VA, and NC all in one.

A somewhat obscure older song which to me always captured the spirit of the early hiking days (Although technically the "Carolina" in the song is a girl)

"Carolina in the Pines" by Michael Murphey

She came to me, said she new me
Said she'd known me a long time
And she spoke of being in love
With every mountain she had climed

And she talked of trails she walked up
Far above the timberline
From that night on I knew I'd write songs
With Carolina in the pines

When the frost shows on the window
And the wood stove smokes and glows
As the fire grows we will warm ourselves
Watching rainbows in the cold

And we'll talk of trails we walked up
Far above the timberline
There are nights I only feel right
With Carolina in the pines

Off the top of my head"

Well, there's "All My Exes Live in Texas" (That's Why I Hang My Hat in Tennessee!" by George Strait

"T For Texas, T for Tennessee" by Waylon Jennings

"America" by Simon and Garfunkel "....counting the cars on the New Jersey Turnpike...."

Or better yet, "Jersey Girl" by Springsteen

"New York, New York", Sinatra

"RoadRunner"by Jonathan Richman (it's about Massachusetts)

"Country Roads" John Denver (for West Virginia)

"Rainy Night in Georgia" by Ray Charles

"Only the Good Die Young" by Billy Joel (Kind of a sucky song, but it's about a girl named "Virginia") :D

I'm sure I'll think of more later.

How about the old New Hampshire song, "Purple LIlacs"?:

I want to wake up in the morning where the purple lilacs grow --
Where the sun comes a peepin' into where I'm sleepin'
And the song birds say "hello!"

I want to wander through the wild woods where the fragrant breezes blow
And drift back to New Hampshire
Where the purple lilacs grow.

Mountains Win Again (http://youtube.com/watch?v=nkCEw27gPsM)
I pick up my smile put it in my pocket
Hold it for a while try not to have to drop it
Men are not to cry so how am I to stop it
Keep it all inside don't show how much she rocked ya

Ooh can you feel the same
Ooh you gotta love the pain
Ooh it looks like rain again
Ooh I feel it comin' in
The mountains win again
The mountains win again

Dreams we dreamed at night were never meant to come to life
I can't understand the ease she pulled away her hand
This time in my life I was hurt enough to care
I guess from now on I'll be careful what I share

Ooh can you feel the same
Ooh ya gotta love the pain
Ooh it looks like rain again
Yeah feel it comin' in
The mountains win again

A pocket is no place for a smile anyway
Someday I will find love again will blow my mind
Maybe it will be that love that got away from me
Is there a line to write that could make you cry tonight
Can you feel the same
Yeah ya gotta love the pain
Ooh it looks like rain again
Ooh feel it comin' in
The mountains win again
Ooh the mountains win again

I personally like this song for New Hampshire - that's where it applies for me.

A lonely yellow light gets swallowed by the morning in New Hampshire
And casts a shadow on the pavement where we used to walk together, yeah, yeah
Put in a small town made of hills and trees
And you've got to believe--this is what you dream
I know she will make it, somehow

Appalachian Chain
Up here on a mountain at high altitude
We got an eye on you
And that's no joking
6,288 feet to the winter peak
And that's some mountain
Hey- what's it take to get you high?
And make a fool out of the sky?
See the farthest reaches of the horizon lights
In the distant night
And that's not changing
Locate the Atlantic with the naked eye
In New England sky
And that's so ocean
Appalachian chain
Driving me insane
On the elevation of the Appalachian chain
Rising elevation of the ultimate height
It is out of sight
And that's not changing
Adverse conditions in the atmosphere
We got to get you here

"Rolling down 295 out of Portland Maine":banana:confused::confused::confused:

Looking out at the road rushing under my wheels
Looking back at the years gone by like so many summer fields
In '65 I was seventeen and running up 101
I don't know where I'm running now, I'm just running on

Running on - running on empty
Running on - running blind
Running on - running into the sun
But I'm running behind

Gotta do what you can just to keep your love alive
Trying not to confuse it with what you do to survive
In '69 I was twenty-one and I called the road my own
I don't know when that road turned onto the road I'm on

Running on - running on empty
Running on - running blind
Running on - running into the sun
But I'm running behind

Everyone I know, everywhere I go
People need some reason to believe
I don't know about anyone but me
If it takes all night, that'll be all right
If I can get you to smile before I leave

Looking out at the road rushing under my wheels
I don't know how to tell you all just how crazy this life feels
I look around for the friends that I used to turn to to pull me through
Looking into their eyes I see them running too

Running on - running on empty
Running on - running blind
Running on - running into the sun
But I'm running behind

Honey you really tempt me
You know the way you look so kind
I'd love to stick around but I'm running behind
You know I don't even know what I'm hoping to find

NOTHING BUT TIME (by Jackson Browne & Howard Burke)

Rolling down 295 out of Portland, Maine
Still high from the people up there and feeling no pain
Gonna make it to New Jersey, gonna set it up and do it again

I got a bottle of wine (pass it over)
I got a broken white line (I'm still sober)
There ain't nothin but time between this Silver Eagle
And that New Jersey line

Well it's a rock and roll band or a movie you can take your pick
And it ain't bad work if you can get it
But you gotta make it stick
But getting any kind of sleep on this rolling motel--that's the trick

It's just a bottle of wine (pass it over)
It's just a broken white line (I'm still sober)
It's just a whole lot of time in the twilight zone
Between me and these friends of mine

THE WIVES ARE IN CONNECTICUT
He figures out a restaurant
Where they won't be recognized
He can always slip the maitre'd a ten
Get a private little table and try her on for size
Make a plan of where to do it when
He's so sly, he's in love with his lies

(Chorus)
And the wives, the wives are in Connecticut

Trying to forget it, that they really do regret it

I’ve been thinking
I’ve been thinking I’ve been thinking too much
I just want to live now for a little while
And cast my dreams to the wind
Don’t wanna wonder
Don’t wanna wonder what it’s all about
I’m just working for a living singing with my friends
As I cast my dreams to the wind

Maryland, I’m coming home
Never worry about what I did wrong
And that I’ll never be what my daddy wanted me to be
And I’ll never see what my mama’s dreams were
But I will sing

I'd vote "No Sleep 'til Brooklyn" for my themesong as that's were I'm relocating in the fall.

Also, anything by Dan Bern. Definitely "Black Tornado". Lines like, "...all I got's what's on my back, guitar and a backpack, my soul is intact," or "it's a day off, it's an off day, it's a budweiser, budget motel, Bukowski kind of night."

Also, "Jersey Girl" by Tom Waits...not Bruce. Baltimore Jack, I know that you have a fondness for the man; however, he crucified that song.

"This is a Low" by Blur would be right on if you were hiking Haedron's Wall. Still fits the mood on this side of the pond.

Everytime I get down on myself I turn on "Hit 'em Up" by TuPac. So much hatred...so little time. It makes me forget what I was thinking about.

Sweet Virginia Breeze by Robin Thompson and Steve Bassett

Woke up this morning the breeze blowin' cross my face
And I just had to look up above and thank somebody for this place
Because He must've been thinkin' bout me
When he planted that very first dogwood tree
It's where I want to be
Livin' in the Sweet Virginia Breeze
Take me out to the country it feels mighty good out there
When I get back to the city of the monuments
It doesn't matter where I hang my hat it's home to me
The Blue Ridge Mountains tend to set me free
It's where I want to be
Livin' in the Sweet Virginia Breeze

Wakes me up in the mornin'
Rocks me to sleep at night
I've got a red bird singin' on my window sill
I know everything will be all right
Livin' in the Sweet Virginia Breeze

Just sittin on my back porch
I'm just watchin' the sun come up
Sweet sweet Virginia Breeze blowin' ripples 'cross my coffee cup
Because he must've been thinkin' bout me when he planted that very first dogwood tree
cause when that breeze comes blowin' through the trees
you know everything will be alright
Livin' in a Sweet Virginia Breeze

"Blue Sky" The Allman Brothers

Walk along the river, sweet lullaby, it just keeps
on flowing, It don't worry 'bout where it's going,
no, no. Don't fly, mister blue bird, I'm just
walking down the road, Early morning sunshine tell
me all I need to know

You're my blue sky, you're my sunny day.
Lord, you know it makes me high when you turn your
love my way, Turn your love my way, yeah.

Good old sunday morning, bells are ringing
everywhere. Goin to Carolina, it won't be long and
I'll be there

You're my blue sky, you're my sunny day.
Lord, you know it makes me high when you turn your
love my way, Turn your love my way, yeah.

These are all great songs and I agree with Marshall Tucker Band, Allman Brothers and several others even including Hank Williams Jr. with a Country Boy Can Survive. A couple of people mentioned Johnny Cash and I totally agree, but no one mentioned this: I've been everywhere, that one has got to have somewhere from every state. I'll try to find the lyrics.

I've Been Everywhere lyrics

I was toting my pack along the long dusty Winnemucca road
When along came a semi with a high canvas covered load
If your goin' to Winnemucca, Mack with me you can ride
And so I climbed into the cab and then I settled down inside
He asked me if I'd seen a road with so much dust and sand
And I said, "Listen! I've traveled every road in this here land!"

I've been everywhere, man
I've been everywhere, man
Crossed the deserts bare, man
I've breathed the mountain air, man
Of travel I've had my share, man
I've been everywhere

For Maryland...

HUNGRY HEART by the Boss, Bruce Springsteen.

Got a wife and kids in Baltimore Jack
Iwent out for a ride and I never went back
Like a river that don't know where it's flowing
I took a wrong turn and I just kept going

I was sanging "Give me three Steps" By Lynard Skynard coming out of Georgia although it don't have the state in it. Brought back a lot of old memories good and bad. Got me up a lot of hills. Rambling Man by the Allman Bros. Mayberry by Rascall Flats is a good one for NC. The Souths gonna do it again by Charlie Daniels Band covers several States
