I didn't really get that much at REI this year.. I pay my rent with my REI CC (for those concerned, I pay it off right away).

FYI, if you haven't received a personal notice through snail or email yet, you should be able to login to your REI account. Go to buy something and when you're checking out, it'll show your balance.

Ok, for anyone who doesn't know about it, REI.com has live chat help. Wayyyy cool. My dividend this year is $53 and change! :banana And the chat help person told me I can wait for a check, go to a store or spend it online. Now. :D Guess who's goin' shopping?

I already spent mine last week. They told me when I was at checkout how much I had and I could spend it. They said that they just haven't sent out letters yet. I had about $25 and it went towards my katadyn hiker pro filter. I would have had a lot more but you don't receive dividends on anything you use a coupon on :(

Yes, you can use your dividend at any store. Just have your membership number handy or they can look it up for you. You can also use your dividend at REI.com. Check the "Apply dividend" box during checkout.

I'm snapping at your heels, ChinMusic. We have the credit card, too, and use it for all cc purchases--gas, food, etc. It really adds up. (We got rid of all our other credit cards a couple of years ago, except for a Costco AmEx.) As credit card companies go, they're good to deal with, too. When we had a problem with a disputed charge, they stepped up and helped promptly and courteously.

And if you run out of things to buy at REI, you can have the dividend converted into cash in June or so.

Assuming that NOBODY pays for anything at REI in cash, usually because it's all in large amounts or expensive stuff, the dividend is 8% with a credit card. With a dividend of $211.38 that's $2642.25!!!!! That's a lotta gear. Of course, if it was all on an REI card, full dividend of 10% for $2113.80 spent...still whoa.

I am envious:eek:

Here's some unsolicitated advice regarding personal finance from a guy more than twice your age.

If you get a credit card, never use the term "credit" again.

Think of it as a payment card...that is to say NEVER carry a balance from month to month unless it is ABSOLUTELY necessary. ALWAYS pay it off every month in full.

PS Bar tabs are not to EVER be charged to your cc..pay cash...especially so the closer it is to closing time:cool:

That's the plan. If I ain't got the money, I ain't got the money. I'm just assuming that I can't setup a direct payment plan like what I have now for the REI card, so I'd have to deal with the bill.

Ditto. It's a very expensive way to borrow money.

OTOH, if you have the discipline to keep a credit card paid off, there are some great advantages to using it over using a debit card. A big REI dividend is one; getting more protection from fraud is another. It's much easier to dispute a credit card charge than to get money put back in your bank account.

I've got $45 and some change coming to me. But, hubby bought me an REI shock lite staff for a birthday present. Well, he bought me one of those about two years ago for an anniversary present, too! It's the thought that counts, but I'm still returning it, combining it with the dividend and 20% off coupon and I'm sure I'll get a good deal on something. I'm not sure what, but whatever it turns out to be, it'll be a good deal.

Will you get it in time (before 3/31/) to combine it with the 20% off coupon ?

Email said I get the credit card in 7-10 days, not sure about the gift card.

Anyone ever return a Thermarest? I got the Prolite last year and after two repairs it's still leaking. Think I can just return it and get a new one?

If you got it at REI, yes.

I returned mine and got a brand new one. They're (REI) pretty good at their return policy. I always make sure I use my membership card for all my purchases so they can keep track of all my purchases - without me having to worry about keeping receipts.

Looks as though everybody got their REI dividend last month...or found out what it was online, anyhow.

Mine just arrived; it was a whole $1.68 worth. WOO HOO!!! :banana

Obviously I didn't spend much there last year, and almost half of what I did was "Nondividendable". Is that even a word?!

I used the "MEMDEAL" and my dividend already.

I wonder if there is a "Gearhead Anonymous"

Just got mine...$12.07. It says it expires 12/31/2009, so i guess it does carry over till next year.

I dont know much about all this REI money back stuff. But i bought some goodies at www.moosejaw.com (http://www.moosejaw.com) and they credit you basically 10 cents out of every dollar you spend. They have free shipping over 40 someodd dollars and from what ive seen all they're prices are the same within a dollar of everyone else. I did order somethings from REI and got charged tax + shipping, Moose added neither. Seems like a pretty slick idea to me. Plus there website, customer service phone number, and packaging are all very humorous!

I like backcountry.com. They have the over 50 buck free shipping and no tax like moosejaw, but have the REI style return policy. No 10 percent refund, but I have found some pretty good deals on there.

Dudes, there is still tax. Only difference is that you have to report and pay it yourselves. If you aren't going to do that, at least don't announce that to the rest of the world or encourage others to be tax cheats! This is a public forum. :D

Despite the arguments of dozens of threads on WB, there is no magic bullet outfitter - online or local. Too many factors to consider. It is all personal preference. For the big online dealers, the best bet is to have it shipped to the store free. I take advantage of this with REI since my brother lives 2 minutes from the one in Nashville.

Whether there is no tax or there is and its just included in a lower retail price of the product... I could care less about the IRS...if they arent busy enough with bigger problems that they have to come after me cause I didnt report something like that, then they can come find me in the mountains :D

Well, I did return it and got a brand new one. It lasted less time than the 1st before springing a leak. Looks like it's back to a Z-lite.

It isn't the IRS, it is the State you live in. For instance, if I buy at Amazon, REI, etc I have to pay sales tax, which those companies then pay to the Dept. of Revenue in that state.

The IRS has nothing to do with sales tax ;)

sarbar
01-21-2009, 16:58
And ps: technically a person is supposed to pay "Use Tax" in many states on items bought outside of the state you live in but didn't pay sales tax on.

So I wouldn't be tooooo loud about beating the man at their game....Dept. of Revenue's are pretty much meaner and better at getting deadbeats than the IRS could ever wish to be :D As my my mom used to say to her clients (she was an accountant)......you can string the IRS along with tiny payments or promises to pay, but screw over the state and they will show up to take everything from you.

It's almost time for the annual REI dividends and the 20% off any one item sale; what is everyone using theirs for?

I'm thinking of either a T-1 tent, or Suunto T3c with GPS pod, or food

BTW, anyone have experience with the Suunto?

Osprey Exos 58. My dividend should pay for it given what I spent last year.

REI just announced their dividend for this year. 10%

i just joined the rei co-op about 1 month ago and i have spent 700.00 so far[gps]. i was buying my gear at ems but lately the ems stores around here have been going downhill. i like to see 1st hand what i am buying and ems instore selections are horrible. the local rei store is amazing with tons of stuff to choose from. so for now on i am an rei loyalist.

on another note i have accumulated $97.75 on my cabellas membership. i used my cabellas card to purchase my gps at rei and got double savings. i spent just over 600.00$ so i get my rei dividend at the end of the year and also points on my cabellas account. i think the gps gave me aproximatly 35.00$ on the cabellas and then the 10% toward my rei dividend 60.00$ if my math is correct.. now thats using the system to its potential..:D

I'm planning on getting more clothing for hiking. I have one of those Columbia Silver Ridge shirts that got a small hole in the shoulder on the last trip out. I like the shirt so I'll get another but I can't figure how that happened. Its not like it got ripped, but more like a small chunk is missing, very strange.

Plus I need to start looking into getting a sleeping bag for warmer weather. With the amount of money I spent at REI last year, I figure my dividend should be pretty large.

We already spent this year's REI dividend at another outfitter. My wife wanted the Montbell #0 sleeping bag, and it was on sale elsewhere. So we took cash from our long-term savings account, bought the bag, and we will wait until summer when we can get our REI dividend and put it into the savings account.

The hard part will be ignoring the dividend and the sale next month. I'm not listening!!!

I was in REI last night and was told the dividends would be out in March of this year.
