You will need the Holston/Watauga National Geographic maps for Roan.
Sams Gap is on the Nolichucky/French Broad NG maps.

Even though it can be warm in the lowlands. Roan can be quite cooler and even have a change in weather in a instant. But it has been relatively windy and rainy with some snow fall. Because of the wind and rain, trail can turn icy and mucky. As of right now, its just wet on top. I was upat Bradley Gap a month ago and it was like a creek bed.

In 2007, the area had a spring snow storm follow by 70mph gusts.

The weather is for major rain today. But it is all good hiking (winter style) all the way to Sams. Expect to have wet feet if your footwear is non-waterproof.
