Roan Mtn Road from the town of Roan Mtn or Bakersville to Carvers Gap is open all year. Toll Booth Road from Carvers Gap to the Gardens doesnt open until April or May.

If you are looking to get to Roan High Knob, you park at Carvers Gap, and hike up the AT to the shelter. Roan High Knob peak is a short walk from the shelter. Its a good size rock formation with a USGS marker on top.

You can get to Carver's Gap. They salt the roads pretty good when it snows.

Yes... it's been in the 60's for the past three days here, but I imagine there's still plenty of snow on Roan and Unaka. Just be prepared for the weather. It's 33 miles or so.

The start of the Nobos are heading through. So you will see lots of faces on the way.

Carvers Gap is a very popular starting spot going either direction. Just keep mindful on the 2000 foot drop to Hughes Gap.

I hiked through there 2 days ago. Lots of snow and wind but easy going.

I drove to Carvers Gap from the NC side on Thursday, the morning after a 7-10 inch snow (depending on elevation). The roads were clear the entire way.

The Tenn. side, which I used to return to Boone, was mostly clear, but there were patches that were still snowy & icy. Much of the Tenn. side is in shadow, while the NC side is South-facing, and gets a lot of sun.
