Is it possible to start the long trail the beginning of May going North? Or will the weather and bugs just be to bad?

Our maintainers at the Green Mountain Club asks hikers to avoid hiking the AT/LT until the end of May. The mud should be severe this year as the winter has been wet and wild.

Its been 10 years since I've done a hike of any distance in VT, but back then they had signs of the trail asking people to not hike until Memorial Day because of the mud. Hiking in those mud conditions will damage the trail.

Thanks for the mud info. I was going to be on the AT through that section and wasn't sure to continue up the LT or not.

Last year in the Southern section there was about 2' of snow in the higher elevations at the beginning of the second week in May. At that time the lower elevations (below 3100') were relatively dry.

The Southern section I was referring to was the AT/LT in the Bennington/Goddard area.

Ice out is usually mid-May in northern VT i believe.
