I asked about underwear because I want to travel lite but I don't want to chafe or a rash.

I use a little anti-biotic mixed with a anti-fungal along with a touch of hydrocortizone...if I get a little chapped...but this happens with or without drawers on ..so I just let'em swing...I think damp drawers probably add to the problem...

Yeah....guys, I would def. take the side that having undies causes more problems than it solves for a long distance hike. More chafing, another piece of clothing that smells, plus...they just kinda get in the way.

I tried a pair of (expensive) Coolmax briefs, but I've found that convertible pants with a mesh liner work just fine. I do carry a pair of the briefs for bedtime, however.

Tried a bunch of stuff.

I started off with some nylon hiking briefs. Those ended up chafing me badly. Then mesh briefs in my shorts...probably worse as they tended to grab and tangle hairs, then yank them out...OUCH!!!!! So one day in the Shenandoahs, I sat by a roadside wearing my rainpants and cut the briefs out of both pairs of shorts and tossed them in the trash along with my underwear. I went without until it got cold, then switched to compression shorts (Hind Drylete) Those rocked.

Now, depending upon conditions, I'll wear boxer briefs or no underwear at all.

For the past few years I've been using Andiamo Skinz as underwear. These are very light and thin shorts for cycling, meant to be worn under regular shorts while on the bike. There is an unpadded version, and that is what I use. No skin irritation to speak of and they dry quickly. They come in white and black. The white version can be a bit revealing if you've been sweating recently.

I use Ex Oficio Amphi convertible pants/shorts with a built-in mesh liner. These are absolutely the best pants I have ever worn. They are a bit expensive though, around $65 a pair.

I have worn undies on all of my trips, suffered badly from the heat and related chafing. Last trip I started with my usual nylon undies, took them off mid day of the second day & never looked back. As I have nylon shorts I still had the heat problem, but only about 10% as bad as it was. So, from now on, probably even when I go to a kilt I shall be commando style :p
