Are most users of the Heinekin keg can pots just boiling water for freezer bag cooking?
Do you cook in the can?
How much liquid does the keg can hold?

What is your stove of choice for the keg can?

I just boil water - mostly for bag cooking but sometimes for tea - the can doubles as my cup for tea.

After considerable experimentation I decided the tea light candle tin (empty) made as good a burner as any other that I tried (good defined by minimizing the fuel needed to boil 1.75 cups of water.

The 24 ounce keg can holds ... well it depends on how you cut the top - the one I use probably would hold about 20 ounces but I never try to boil that much - most meals I cook only need about 14 ounces (1.75 cups).

I use a modified "Fancy Feast" stove to boil water for freezer bag meals.

Freezer bag cooking for me. Mine is chopped (http://www.bplite.com/viewtopic.php?f=17&t=590) http://whiteblaze.net/forum/vbg/files/6/7/7/9/hkc_018_thumb.jpg (http://whiteblaze.net/forum/vbg/showimage.php?i=23036&c=favorites)and holds about 20 ounces.

The question is has anyone made one out of the 5L mini keg? I eye that everytime I am at the store. I wonder if it would work if I cut the height down.

I set out to do it a few times but lost my motivation in the process of disposing of extraneous liquid.

How does everyone get their can off the burner? Do you guys use a bandanna, a shirt, or do you have some sort of pot holder? Does anyone eat out of the can or do most do the bag cooking?

Cheap wool gloves that I carry anyway.

I cook in a bag or in the ZipLoc container that carries the kit.

I was just checking out that Ziploc container you made on another post, I really like that. That's sounds like it'd be great to eat out of and easier to clean than the can. Have you ever made/used a pot cozy with the ziploc cointainer?

It is my pot cozy (http://youtube.com/watch?v=ITr1Ht4ndnY).

In winter I carry it in a 1 ounce insulated stuff sack for a Coleman stove but wrapping it in a hat works as well.

Here's a video (http://youtube.com/watch?v=ITr1Ht4ndnY) that illustrates the concept.

The container is a bit different but the principle is the same.

Bandanna - folded 4 times for a total of 16 layers of cloth - is what I use most - on rare occasions I have some leather gloves that I will use to pick up the hot pot.

I don't eat out of the can but sometimes I will drink tea out of the can

Hi Skids,
Great videos. That looks like my new coffee system. Are the plastic containers made by zip lock? Is this two different containers put together?

That's pretty cool. I was always wondering if I could make a portable wood stove for shelters. I was thinking pots before, but why stop there.

Yes, it's the ZipLoc Medium round:

http://sybarite.us/puertorico/wp-content/uploads/2007/02/ziploc_twist_n_loc_containers.jpg

And the Ziploc small round:

http://www.walgreens.com/dbimagecache/317937.jpg

Another option for those that want to stick with their titanium pots is to use a 16 oz. or 18 oz. instant cake frosting container:

http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51tCa8qTbsL._AA280_PIbundle-12,TopRight,0,0_AA280_SH20_.jpg

They are made of Polypropylene(# 5, resistant to hot water). This cup/coffee basket system can be carried with pots like the SnowPeak 600, 700, and Mini-Solo and larger by nesting inside the pot. Here's how you do it:

Throw away the lid that comes with the frosting container because the ZipLoc small lid will snap right on to the frosting cup upside down:

http://whiteblaze.net/forum/vbg/files/6/7/7/9/cake_frosting_coffee_system_003_thumb.jpg (http://whiteblaze.net/forum/vbg/showimage.php?i=23116&c=516)

Then, you snap your small Zip-Loc/drip coffee basket on top of that. You can store your stove inside!

http://whiteblaze.net/forum/vbg/files/6/7/7/9/cake_frosting_coffee_system_005_thumb.jpg (http://whiteblaze.net/forum/vbg/showimage.php?i=23115&c=516)

The whole thing will even fit inside a chopped Heineken pot although the 16 oz frosting container would be better for a Heineken pot IMO because it's shorter and more compact.

Here's a photo of the 18 oz. frosting cup setup nested inside a chopped Heineken pot. Notice it's a little tall and that's why the 16 oz would be a better fit for Heineken cans:

http://whiteblaze.net/forum/vbg/files/6/7/7/9/cake_frosting_coffee_system_008_thumb.jpg (http://whiteblaze.net/forum/vbg/showimage.php?i=23114&c=516)

The 18 oz cup and Zip-Loc filter basket weigh in at 1.65 ounces.

Skidsteers video gets watched a lot on my site :D I don't know if I have ever said thanks, but here it is!
My buddy Mugs uses a Heiny pot and for a stove uses a Esbit stove he designed. He uses his gloves or a bandanna to take the lid off or move the pot.

Which keg sized can is best, and why?
I recently purchased several, and made the usual initial preparations to use them all.

Heineken kegs?

The 24 ounce size. Because the 12 ounce size is a bit small and the 5L is more useful as bear canister.

Skidsteer's system works beautifully. I store my alcohol stove, Heine pot, wind screen / pot stand, 4 oz fuel bottle, lighter, etc inside. I use the large ziplock container for the freezer bag cozy then open the bag and carefully pull the edges of the bag over the lip of the container to eat. I haven't used it on the trail yet, but instead of making a sandwich for lunch yesterday, I heated water with the alky stove, made a freezer bag lunch, and ate it while watching the Bristol race. The hardest part was waiting 20 minutes for the Lipton rice meal to hydrate in the freezer bag. I was hungry! I plan to make a cozy for it out of Reflectix for use on the trail, perhaps more to protect my hand from the heat than to keep the heat in.

I just wanted to share some breaking news about a lid for the Heiny Pot.

Lifesavers makes a candy called "fruit tarts" that my excellent co-worker Jess introduced me to. They come in a tin that looks like this:http://www.walgreens.com/dbimagecache/329895.jpg

The important advantage to this lid over the Altoids tin lid is that it locks in place ( :banana) and it fits perfectly on a Heiny pot with the original rolled edge left intact.

You remove the lid by pressing on the center, and lock it onto the can by lightly pressing the sides.

In honor of my co-worker, I am naming this modification "The Jess Lid."

Enjoy!

I did some further tests of your fantastic lid. It's the best thing since sliced bread when we think of cooking with the Heineken Pot.
