In your experience, when you pack for a five day/five night hike, how large is your food bag?

Depends on what kind of food you are carrying. I carry mainly dehydrated meals, so my food bag is usually a small or medium size stuff sack.

We used the outdoor research bags from Wally world. They come in small, medium, and large and worked well. They say they are dry bags, but they are only water repellent, not totally waterproof.

Well, that's something you can figure out for yourself, no? Figure, say, two pounds a day. Pick your resupply interval... let's say four days. OK, now go out and buy 8 pounds of food that you can take on a hike. Remove unnecessary packaging, re-package as required. Now find a bag or two to fit it in!

Plan on about a liter of volume per day. That's a generous estimate, but you'll be glad to have the extra room. Most people's food bags are in the 4-5 liter range.
