So...any late-breaking news from or about our intrepid wanderer? :confused:Well, I was going to write "I heard Matt stepped off the Trail to pee on the south side of a tree then walked north of the tree back to the Trail. So he skipped entire yards of Trail and is no longer eligible for the holy Patch," but I'm not.

our brother is heading for Atkins VA....as we speak.

for any matthewski stalkers out there, you may be able to find him some miles north of atkins tonight.

Matt said that his ankle is doing ok, he got a brace for each ankle and it has helped him out very much he said. he also thinks the brace is the answer.

I think he said he did a 15 and 17 mile day. he was talking and the wind was blowing.

how about yesterday morning for a hike? absolutely stunning.

also, if anyone is up at the Pinnacle this Sunday morning, keep and eye out for my manager and his kids. My employee is taking his nephews and his daughter up for the hike from Hamburg Resevoir to the Pinnacle.

have a great holiday weekend everyone.

Butterfinger Blizzard? Nah, more likely a bacon one. People looking for Matty will probably find him at the Rendezvous Motel in Pearisburg on Thursday or Friday, and most likely at Captain's hiker party that weekend, 20 miles further down the Trail.

I find it humorous that my name popped up in this thread.

It seems that the "hike you own hike" motto only applies when everyone is satisfied with the way you are hiking your hike.

I am yet to receive any PM's on the matter, so clearly some people are raising a fuss on the forums for the hell of it.

Hope Matty is well and in one piece.

Locks of love is a huge scam! They sucker people into donating hair so they can sell them to celebrities who need weaves. They say they are making wigs for kids with cancer, but kids with cancer almost always use artificial hair wigs. I wish more people were aware of their lies!

Good article, darlin'...thanks. Here's a relevant excerpt:

Lauren Kukkamaa, Locks of Love communications director, says the organization is often misunderstood.

"We're a word-of-mouth organization that has benefited greatly from word of mouth, but also information changes as it goes down the line and gets misinterpreted a lot," she says.

Kukkamaa confirms that Locks of Love collects more hair then they can use, and sells the surplus hair to commercial wig companies. However, Kukkamaa says the organization sells the hair for two very important reasons.
First of all, she says, much of the hair they receive is unusable because it's either gray, dyed or too short. Locks of Love hair donations must be natural in color – but not gray -- and at least 10-in. long to make a hairpiece.

Also, Kukkamaa says Locks of Love is a charity, not a wig manufacturer, and so the organization pays $1,000 out-of-pocket per hairpiece, which is still much less then the retail cost of $3,500. She says the money they make from selling surplus hair helps to offset the cost of manufacturing.

"These hairpieces are very expensive. They are custom-made for each child. They fit like a prosthesis and have a vacuum fit so no one can pull it off," she says. "Children can swim and play sports while wearing them."

Kukkamaa says Locks of Love is legit – as did the Better Business Bureau...

So you all have created a curiosity with me. I am wondering how some organizations are related? A few years back when friend of mine was battling cancer I remember that she got some wig/hats from the American Cancer Society. I also remember when she was in remission that she said she was going to donate those hats/wigs to the American Cancer Society. Eventually cancer took her life.
At the time, I thought that all the organizations that had anything to do with hair for those fighting cancer were all good. But I guess I was expecting too much. Once again, my idea of the way it should be turns out to me being uninformed and dreaming.
Wouldn't it be nice if they all worked together to make life easier for all involved!

Just search "locks of love truth" and you'll find lots of articles about them. Basically, 80% of the hair they receive isn't even usable. What is usable is mostly sold for cash. Since their inception, only about 2000 wigs (less than 200 a year) have been donated, but millions of young people have donated hair. Children who have lost hair by chemotherapy are not eligible as they only do wigs for those who have permanent hair loss. But people want to feel good about themselves and giving, so they get suckered into donating. This is just one example of an article telling the truth: www.squidoo.com/locksoflove.

Folks,

Camo posted some truly relevant information.

Any charity has expenses. I am not defending Locks of Love, nor defaming them.

But the fact that they sell hair, does nothing to take away from the 200 wigs per year they have donated. If you multiply 200x3500= 700000.00 that is 3/4 of amillion for those with math problems.

Where do you think they get money to operate?

the Better Business Bureau is not going to give their stamp of approval to a scam. Whatever your friend may have told you.

Matty left me a message and told me where he was, but I didnt recognize the name of the town. He said he will only skip ahead if I marry him. So everyone either has to get out their best hiker trash garb for our wedding or look for a disappointed Matthewski walking somewhere between where he is and Front Royal. Oh what to decide, what to decide.

Since he's been up and down the Parkway and talked to Jack for an afternoon he seems to think that he knows exactly where the trail goes and how to get there. It's going to be fun to watch from 10 yards back (with my map and guidebook should anything go wrong). Otherwise, I'll just let the prince of missdirection rip. Peace all!

Well...apparently the intrepid young Kirby did a road walk on Skyline Drive through Shenandoah N.P.

Which actually used to be the A.T. until the Park Service took it over.

So, if that's what Matt is planning, it's certainly not unprecedented.

Or babbling, or fantasy...

Oh yeah, I totally plan on taking the road when it's shorter or goes past food and beer. Matty; however, quickly looked at a 7 year-old set of out-dated maps and then babbled about how he was getting on/off the road. It was fun to listen to because I know it'd be fun to watch. But yeah, I expect the two of us to road walk about 40 or 50% of the park. I had fun listening to him ramble about Nautical Dawn, Full Moons, and Chicken Sandwiches before my first cup of coffee. Then he up and run off with a ride without being corrected as to when to get on or off the road. So, he'll cozy up with a ranger or something and be put straight.

More rationalizations.

Why not try this? "Walking the Skyline Drive (which is a road) through SNP is shorter and easier than walking the AT (which is a footpath/trail)."

Jack Tarlin

Another rationalization:

Doing most of your traveling on the A.T. with convenient automotive support is lots easier than actually carrying a backpack and being self-sufficient.

As to what's easier and quicker on the A.T., I think I'll defer to Mr. Doyle. :D

Nah, no show today. I just thought it was pretty amusing to see a guy who relies so heavily on car support getting snooty about other people walking along Skyline Drive.

I guess only select people are allowed to take advantage of the presence of roads while using the A.T.

No problem, Jack. I enjoyed your retort. I walked the final (southernmost) 3 miles of the parkway, just to say I'd done it. Besides, after walking along it (and listening to it) for 100 miles I thought I ought to get a taste of what the tourons were experiencing. It turned out to be pretty boring; no views in that stretch. Nice views from the Inn at Afton, though. And a nice pool, too.

The important issue for me is following the white blazes (not the weight you carry) which I have done even during my 15,000+ miles of backpacking on the Appalachian Trail, along with my 15,000+ miles of dayhiking on the AT.

I know how it is to be a self-sufficient backpacker when I have to be or want to be.

Warren:

Wouldn't have mentioned this, but it was, after all, YOU who brought it up.

Why do you make such a big deal reminding people about your accumulated mileage, either here or in Trail register entries (like the recent ones I've seen the past few weeks).

Do you really think anyone cares?

And do you think this public boasting elevates you in the eyes of your readers?

And you should check out some of the comments people have added whenever they see your bragging!

Lastly, you've been writing recently to tell everyone how many times you've completed the Trail.......yet you never include the fact (that you just acknowledged) that an inordinately large amount of your mileage came along thanx to the use of a vehicle.

How come you never bother to mention this?

I mean, if you're determined to wow people with your resume, you might want to attempt to be more honest about it. :D

But be that as it may, it's still pretty damned amusing to see a guywho has spent nearly all of his recent time on the A.T. as a day-hiking slackpacker get all snooty and high-fallutin' about people who take advantage of nearby roads and highways! :D

Warren might not see the humor here, but I assure him there are plenty of folks here who find this hysterically funny.

I've been thru Shenandoah Park at least ten times now. Last year and this year I spent a good deal of time on Skyline Drive, and as a consequence, saw all sorts of things I'd never seen.

I have to disagree with Tin Man on one thing, tho: A lot of folks are committed to hiking the Trail IN ITS ENTIRETY, and don't want to skip a yard of it, and I think that's great.

But the simple truth is that in a lot of places (like the Smokies, Shenandoah, the Presidential Range in New Hampshire), a lot of the spectacular stuff, including many of the best scenery and views, are NOT, in fact, on the A.T., and 99% of thru-hikers never see them.

I urge future hikers to allocate enough time on their hikes so they can take side trips to see some of these places, as well as covering their miles on the Trail. If you don't want to deviate from the actual Trail, I think that's fine, but if you can, try and take in some of the side stuff as well. You won't be sorry.

Aw, please.

There was NO trouble here whatsoever til post #1450, where Warren decided to get all snobby about people who take advantage of roads while hiking.

All I was doing was to point out that he's about the last person who should be getting huffy about this.

If he gets sensitive about people talking about how he hikes, then he might want to think twice before saying stuff like he did in #1450.

But getting all sniffy about people who want to walk Skyline Drive seems a bit much to me.

And criticizing folks for how they allegedly "rationalize" their hikes is a bit over the top.

Bottom line, DWM, is that when someone comes here and starts making disparaging remarks about how other folks are doing the Trail, then it invites comments on how THEY choose to travel. People that dish on others shouldn't be surprised when other folks dish back, and they shouldn't whine about it, either.

No offensive meant to people who hike past every white blaze as I have for the 400 miles that I have completed to date. I was referring to those who continue to downplay other's hikes, because they followed a slightly different route, which may have been a former route or simply a more interesting path along the corridor. It is all the holier than thou stuff that is troubling. Most don't care what others think, but I would hate to see newbie's persuaded by the white blaze single-mindedness mentality. Only a very small minority will hold anything but a pure white blaze hike against others. And that is no reason to define your own hike.

I agree 100%. I am not a hiker. My son is a hiker; on the trail now with a good group out of Waynesboro today. I met many of you at Hot Springs and Damascus. Would not mind spenidng a lot of good time on the trail with any of you. You have to remember why you are doing what you are doing. He'll be here in Harper's a week from Sunday. :D
