Water Gap to Bear Mt. Easiest spot on the whole trail to reach from Ohio.

I'd like to agree with you, but last year we planned a family hike there from like april 7 -14 or so but we cancelled at the last minute -- car was packed and everything-- when a snowstorm came thru.

winding stair gap to fontana? not sure how crowded it will be though:-?

Ditto Winding Stair to Fontana (57 miles). Or the Smokies. (72 miles) Closer to you would be Pearisburg to Craig Cr Valley (61 miles). Dickey Gap to Damascus is 53 miles, the Highlands are short part of this. The areas down in NC will be crowded with thru hikers.
