This is sudden...but if he'd been battling cancer, not totally unexpected. Did the ALDHA folks know?

Prayer going up, for him and his family...

My first personal encounter with "John O!" was as a true "newbie" at The Gathering in 2000. What a warm, wonderful welcome he extended on behalf of ALDHA and the hiking world.

Amazingly, year after year, he remembered me and always had a friendly word and kind greeting.

His stories were so enjoyable, especially the humor he shared just laughing at himself and his adventures with friends.

May the memories of this great man comfort his family and friends. He will surely be missed!

I'm just stunned. I had not known he was ill, so this is a horrible shock.
He will be GREATLY missed by a WHOLE lot of folks.

A shame, not even retirement age for most. :( If you have any second thoughts about thru-hiking or waiting til retirement or a better time...

Wow...

I had the pleasure of knowing John O form hiker gatherings over the years.

Always had a smile, quick with a joke and never missed a chance to tease the Red Sox fans about his beloved Yankees.

He'll be missed.

JohnO is hiking a higher trail now, and no doubt is still helping others up mountains...

Peace, John.
