Groundsheet - PCT

Specifically, I'll be hiking the PCT, but Whiteblaze gear nuts are well know for there over the top suggestions.

I see many people cowboy camp so I guess a ground sheet would be useful. I was also thinking I might be able to place holes in the groundsheet to make a quick sun shade for afternoon breaks.


hey what are peoples favorite materials for groundsheets?

tyvek, plastic, sil nylon, mylar, cuban fiber.... -- PROS / CONS of each?

Gossamer Gear polycro plastic footprint. - 5.5oz. Lightest thing out there. You can also cut it down to save an oz or 2. Very durable.

Polycro is clear, isn't it?

I'd recommend getting a very small tarp with tie out loops made out of silnylon. If possible, get a dark color for a sunshade.

Or, better yet, a poncho for rain protection as well.

I don’t use them, I have never had a tent floor ware out so I don’t see them as needed.

Also they can make it so you get wet in the rain more then if you didn’t use one. When it’s raining water that gets between the ground sheet and the underside of the tent floor has no place to drain to. It’s going to come up through the floor fabric with you applying pressure on it. Without the ground sheet any water that is under the tent will soak into the ground, keeping you dry.
