Is Skyline drive open? Not sure if this is a seasonal highway. Heading down on Thursday for a 4 day hike then it struck me that it might not be open and I was planning on hitching in tot he park via Skyline about 60 miles or so

Not really, except after big storms. they don't clear the hillsides next to the roads (obviously...it's a nat'l park) so after storms there can be trees and debris on the road and they'll close sections of it. They also close for snow and ice.

But remember that it is a scenic route mostly travelled by vacationers. During the winter and early spring, you may find very little traffic.

It's actually been closed every weekend that I needed it open this winter. And it's only ever the section where I wanted to backpack, the rest of it will be open except that stretch. I've just had bad luck with preplanned trips this year.

Their number that zoidfu2 listed is always up-to-date and the website is kept very up-to-date as well - http://www.nps.gov/shen/planyourvisit/drive_status.htm

I keep the park phone number in my cell too!

Na, I always ended up doing something else, I'm just saying I'm not going to plan anymore for winter cuz I never end up where I originally wanted to go in the first place. North section gets closed so I end up in southern SNP or vice versa.

FYI, they do not salt or sand the icy parts of the road when it does open and it can be pretty treacherous, even for 25 mph.
