Hi,
I'm in too.
This is a little OT but there is a kind of similar site for humans called www.freerice.com.
You do a few vocabulary questions and if you get the answers right it pays for rice in developing countries. Nice idea. I think it was started also to help kids with vocabulary. Although some of the kids in our class have enjoyed, I doubt it really does that.

I did it too.
I've done freerice.com also. Great site. I can't answer for the kids, but it helped MY vocabulary! When you get into those upper levels, those words are HARD!
There are a number of tabs across the top on that site, hunger, rainforests, breast cancer etc. where you can click to help out.
It is a daily stop.

Torie is a rescue (escaped from a puppy mill at age 7 months-- mama is so proud :-)), and ended up running along the highway (see she was born a hiker!).
Anyway, I know this is a bit OT but someone should make this a sticky so we could remember to click this. A nice easy way to help out.

All my cats are rescue cats. At one time I had 15 strays, fixed and found homes for them all. When I had dogs they were all rescue as well.
I've always wanted a pure-breed but then think of all the strays that have no homes.
hikingPA thanks for bring this site to our attention.

Well there are purebred strays too! Though I think mostly they are, like Torie, bred by someone purposefully then dropped for various reasons. For instance, many people with a herding dog do not realize that they need lots of exercise or that most of them shed like crazy.

Bumping this thread up ... for a quick visit to the free dog food site.
Thank you, hikingPA, for starting this thread. My wife and I have had five greyhound rescues in our home over the last two decades (one rescued from a medical lab) and they've added an incalculable amount to our lives. Greyhounds aren't great hiking companions (though the next poster reminds me that some are!) but are great company if you ever feel like taking up sprinting! I'll try to remember to click this site every day.
My wife does a lot of volunteer work for Heartland Greyhound Adoption, and they use petfinder.com, which is associated with the site you linked to.

I beg to differ, map man. My girl loves the trail now that I've gotten enough meat on her bones and she knows her way around. She cries before we get to the trailhead in anticipation, whines when we leave.
The whole couch potato thing is a bit overdone, imo (though I've seen some that definitely are). She used to sprint out a lot energy early in a hike-- now she knows better and saves up a bit. "Anyone want to go hiking???" (whine, whine, whine).... A local club does some short Sunday morning hikes here-- there are a couple in that group who would probably go all day, everyday.
Couldn't imagine five! We are thinking about looking for a second at the moment. You must have a lot of time invested. Good stuff.
Yes, you are right, Nomad94. Some others in the local greyhound rescue group have found the same thing. I guess I'm always leery about taking ours into a rabbit-and-squirrel-rich environment:D. By the way, we've had a total of five, but never more than two at a time. I hope you and your greyhound continue to prosper -- I always love hearing about another happy hound that's found a good home.

Bumping the thread up this morning.
Thanks for bumping the thread up, Doggiebag! Some how I missed it the first few go arounds.
I clicked.....what a great thing. I have a 22 month old Golden Retriever/Lab mix pup that we adopted from the Animal shelter. She's a handful, but loved very much. :)
I'd always missed this thread, too.
Bump.

Aaaand another bump.
Thnx for the bump, missed this one altogether.
Ditto on the thanks. I have missed it as well. I have 3 large, one an SPCA rescue (pure bred, Desdemona!) and donate to them every year.
Fr.
:o I can certainly write better than the above ;).
I have 3 large dogs one of which is an SPCA rescue. I donate to the SPCA every year. The doguses get my love, food and attention donations every day.
This is more understandable, me thinks.

While I am a FL teacher, I can't make heads or tails of that. Can you translate?

Looks like we have a spammer. I wouldn't touch those links if I were you.
I did click two of the links, and I am at work. So far the computer is working. One link goes to a Chinese website and another to a gaming website.
Hope someone remembers how to report this to a moderator.
Frau
Well, DUH on me. I didnt' even look at all your credentials, Mr. Moderator.
Maybe you have removed the suspect post by now.

Great thing...been doing this for months. I get daily reminders sent to my email so I always click.
My dogs are always rescues...currently I have a beagle mix and she is the sweetest girl.
I adopted a yellow lab (from SPCA) who had wandered away from his two previous homes. By golly, he gets out of my $$$ fence, but returns when called. Even though I got him for (and at the request of my son [I was volunteering at the SPCA at the time] I made a commitment to this dog--which I uphold. We have one geriatric Rottie (almost 9), and one challenged Lab, (ACL and hip),
BUT--OF three dogs, I have one healthy, athletic trail dog (Winston Wonderdog).
A. mtnlvr--I hope your adoptee is as terrific a trail dog as any trail companions here on WB. Nessmuk likes hiking with me, but I miss WIN when he is not along--a LOT.
