They had a stack of these at my local Dick's on clearance for $89.99 so I picked up a pair.

I don't really know much about them, but I was familiar with Red Wing and I know they make good footwear. I am doing my first section hike (9 days) in May on the AT so I wanted to get a decent pair of boots. They feel relatively light, but I am curious if anyone has any experience or opinions of these boots. I bought them on impulse, but I can always take them back as I have not worn them outside yet.

The 400g of thinsulate will make them too hot, especially for May. Your feet will very likely sweat and be at risk for blisters.

Return them. Try trailrunners

Thanks for the advice. I started reading all of the little tags that were hanging off of them and noticed it said something like "not recommended for use during strenuous activity which may generate a lot of body heat".

I returned them this morning.

Any recommendations for boots in the $80-$100 range? I am not really interested in the sneaker type trail shoes, as I need the ankle support.

If you can find them for the right price, you cannot go wrong with Asolo, Lowa or Vasque. They are all phenomenal shoes.

I picked up a new pair of Lowa Seekers for $140 off of ebay, these will work great since I can also use them during my military simulation training. I will start breaking them in next week. Thanks for the advice and help.
