Me and my dad are going to go on a hike this summer (middle June), and we both need sleeping bags, we need a tent, and a pack for my dad, i just need some recomendations, i have a Osprey Atmos 50, our Hike will be about 3-4 days possibly 5 and we plan to hike more, can you also provide the weight of each, the price range is $150-300 for each item more leaning to the $150 side, if you can't give the weight, go ahead and recommend it any way, thanks

Mid June in the south... you won't need much. I'd take a jacket and a cheap wal-mart fleece bag ($25, if that. Or make one). And a winter hat, because it's the most efficient heat-conserving gear you can take.

may i suggest a mosquito net hat thingy :D

i have a lafuma x800 bag that i love - sub 2 lbs and sub $80

if dad is going out this time and that's it you may want to look into renting equipment for him. much cheaper route and then you can spend his extra money on YOUR gear muhhahhah

I would recommend bringing a sleeping bag even in the summer. Especially if your going to do a 5 day hike in the mountains.

If you don't already have a bag I would recommend a 20 degree goose down bag. Its a good general purpose bag. You could use that in the spring, summer and fall. Get one that weights around 2 and a half pounds or so.

Try this site for bags:
http://www.campmor.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/CategoryDisplay?categoryId=73067&storeId=226&catalogId=40000000226

They have one of the best selections of bags around.
You will also need a sleeping pad for under the bag.
WWW.CAMPMOR.COM (http://WWW.CAMPMOR.COM) will have everything you need for backpacking.

Campmor has the
Kelty Light Year 20 Degree Down Sleeping Bag Regular
http://www.campmor.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?productId=39349766&memberId=12500226&catalogId=40000000226
20 degree goose down bag on sale for $140. Good price. (regular price $180, Its $190 at WWW.REI.COM (http://WWW.REI.COM))
650-fill-power goose down
it weights 2 pounds 6 ounces.

As far as a stove is concerned, just go to campmor web site and do a search for "STOVE". They have plenty of good hiking stoves.

The 3-season stove I am currently using is the:
MSR Pocket Rocket Stove
http://www.campmor.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?productId=14104244&memberId=12500226&storeId=226&catalogId=40000000226&langId=-1

It weights 3.3 ounces and cost $40 and you have to buy a fuel canister for about $4 for a 4 fl ounce isobutane container.

For a backpack, I use the 3 pound
Granite Gear Nimbus Ozone Ultralight Internal Frame Pack
for $230.
Also at campmor.

For a tent I am using the Black Diamond Lighthouse:

It weights 3 pounds and 3 ounces and costs about $390.

2.5lb for a June bag? Thats nuts, for that area in June the fleece bag ( 15.00 ) is more than enough. Its what I use. Just take zip off pants and a rain jacket and a hat and you'll be fine even in a worse case senareo. Use a ground pad thermarest. 3/4 length is like 50.00.
The Snow Peak giga stove ( 50.00) works great. Nothing better no matter what anyone says. Easy carry easy light no muss no fuss. like 2 oz plus small canister of fuel which is like 10 oz, will last about 5 or 6 days easy.
For a tent the Sierra Designs is an inexpensive but great tent. Look at the Clip Flash Light CD 4.5 lbs two man( 179.99 )
The Osprey packs are great, any of them.
Have fun.

Also look at the trail north / south of Damascus Va, the Grayson Highlands area is great. Pretty easy trail with some of the best views of anywhere, lot of balds. Nice and cool in summer. If you or your dad are just starting hiking or not in shape those trails in Ga ( straight up and down and hot hot hot) ARE brutal and no fun otherwise. I'd stay in NC/Tn or Va. The BMT over around Robbinsville (Slick Rock / Joyce Kilmer area) is good too with lots of trout fishing, BUT take a map, it gets confusing with alot of cross trails and blow downs.
But seriously, the trails in Ga are hot and just too much work for a short hike if your not in shape or use to it, stay up high and comfy. ;)

I my self am in pretty good shape, i am on the cross country and Track, team, so i clock in about 25-35 miles per week, but my dad is in ok shape, he can runforever on a treadmill, but thats a treadmill, i hate those things, i have not heard of reanting gear, but i may need to look into it, my dad seems to really want to go in the Smokies, which i do not know why, because you have to leave an itenerary, cannot have tents at shealter and you have to make reservations for the shealters, i believe that it is the drive because my mom will have to pick us up, i actually hiked this past summer from Neels Gap to Dicks Creek Gap around 40 miles so i know how GA is but my dad may not, we are thinking of Fontana Dam to US441, just past Clingmans
