I cant really seem to find much about climbing Katahdin during winter. I have seen all the rules so I know about that. Does anyone know of any journals or any more information about it.

I have not been to BSP in winter, so this is based on conversations with others. Better sources may be Views from the Top (http://viewsfromthetop.com/), Rocks on Top (http://rocksontop.com/), or the AMC bulletin board (http://appalachia.outdoors.org/bbs/). You might also be interested in this journal (http://home.earthlink.net/%7Eellozy/baxter2002.html) on a winter BSP trip.

The park tote roads are, of course, not plowed; snowmobiles are permitted on sections of them but many winter hikers in Baxter are peakbaggers and use of a snowmobile makes the trip "not count."

The "conventional" route is to spend a day from the park gates to Roaring Brook, a day from Roaring Brook to Chimney Pond, and then a day to summit (usually via the Saddle). Some people run all the way out of the park on the third day; some spend another night at Chimney Pond. But the nights at Roaring Brook and Chimney Pond on the way in are required.

It is also permitted to make a complete round trip in one day: from the gate up the road to the Abol Slide, summit (optional side trip to Hamlin peak, usually taken by the sort of person who would do this!), and return the same way. This requires a signup at least two weeks in advance, including a list of party members and a pretty extensive review of your winter hiking/climbing resume. If the weather doesn't pan out, too bad....you need to start the process all over. (Skis are highly recommended for this approach.)
