Need some advice on brand/style to buy. There are quite a few good spots to hike near where. One of the main surfaces to hike on, however, is gravel (big rocks not pea gravel) and the asics running shoes that I hike in, while lightweight and comfortable, don't offer much protection for the soles of my feet. I'm looking for a shoe that is light yet also will offer some protection so that after a 10 mile hike I don't have to hobble around like a 90 year old man. Any suggestions?

I have enjoyed my Inov-8 Terroc 330's. They have an aggresive sole, and breath nicely.

I grew up in Rome, where do you do most of your hiking?

Trailrunners will be better for your soles

Pinhoti Trail from Rome to Taylor's Ridge and also the trails at Berry College's Mountain campus.

I also use Asics. I've found that their Trebuco trail Runners feel great, but are a bit too soft for hiking on rocky ground.

I bought a pair of low-topped Hi-Tec boots like these

and they are surprisingly comfortable and have a stiff enough sole for rocks.

I love my Brooks Adrenaline ASR trail runners with Spenco insoles. You're feet get used to the rocks ( I wore mine from Harpers Ferry to ME)

Would Superfeet inserts help on small rocks? (I can't use them, curious.)

I've had pretty good results with Montrail

I love my Merrells. I just got a new pair and they feel great right out of the box. The Chameleons give me enough protection on Pennsylvania rocks, so they should work anywhere.

I should confee that I wear a size 15, so my options are kinda limited!
