What is the best general (ie. non-birding specific) field guide(s) for the Northern part of the trail, ie. Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont?

I thought this was an interesting book. It's not a field guide exactly, more of like an overview of forest communities. All that eco-interdependence fun stuff, hakuna matata, the circle of life and the rest of that jazz.

I have the National Audubon Society Field Guide To New England. It's compact and has a little of everything: birds, animals, trees, wildflowers, insects and more.

Petersons' Field Guides. Perhaps the most complete and definitive field guides ever published IMO.

Each guide book specializes in a single topic; from star constelations to edible plants to North American mammals.
