i just wanted to tell all of bears and my friends that we lost a great friend today. bear was born on december29th 1993 she was 14 years old. we didnt find the appalachian trail til she was 5yrs old. but made alot of great friends over the years, she wasn't perfectly suited for the trail. but we loved each others company! she was a big ole black dog. over heated easy. we night hiked alot! on our first thru in 99', i had her carry a pack for less than a 100 miles then we tossed that in a hiker box,and i took pride in carrying her gear/food.for the next 6,000 miles! on our last two long distance hikes i wanted her to stay with me on our journey, but not hurt her.or have her do all the miles! with the help of great people like(night stalker, miss janet, bob&pat peoples, wild child, bonzo, bag o trick, rob in dalton, blister sister)and many more- i was able to get her time off(zero days) while i did insane mileage. i feel so empty right now,but at least shes no longer in pain. to all that ever cared for bear or helped her in any way. thankyou

Unfortunately I never met Bear, but she must have been an extraordinary friend to you, and those who met her. All the lives that she touched over her years will have benefited so much.

We just put our minpin down a couple of weeks ago. We have another 15yo dog that will need to be put down too as well. He's having more and more trouble with his hind legs. My sympathies to you, I know how you feel.

You have my deepest sympathies, friend. I have known many dogs on the trail, but not many trail dogs. I am sad to hear that I know one less.

Sorry to hear about your loss. We've gone through this 5 times now, and it never gets any easier. Take comfort in your memories, and know that Bear is on the other side, waiting to go on that Great Hike with you.

Aw, that's hard.
I'm sorry you lost your dear hiking partner and companion.
I enjoyed your Bear stories. Thank you for telling them.
She was an '03 sister.

I am very sorry for your loss. It is one of the hardest things we have to go through in this life.
The joy they bring is worth the sorrow we feel when they have to go.

I am very sorry to hear that. There is no easy to deal with a loss of a friend like that. Just know that she is hiking the greatest trail of all and she'll sniff out a great spot to setup camp for when you get there.

It's always sad to lose a pet. But they do have an advantage over humans. When the time comes most owners are unselfish enough to end their misery.

My daughter's dog visited us today. Fenway is taking heart medicine and is growing blind. But she remembered all her old haunts and insisted on visiting them all today when I took her for a walk. My daughter, I'm sure, will do what's right for Fenway when the time comes.

I sometimes wonder when my time comes, if I'll find someone equally kind.

Finding someone that understands that is difficult when the time is actually there. Not that I know.

I'll add my condolences, too. My pet/friend isn't a good trail hiker, but she is a great companion. I've lost some over the years and almost lost Trix a couple of years ago. Only a true pet lover would completely understand.

Thanks to all for the support, kind words and messages! As a dog (and Dino) lover, Bear was quick to win over our hearts. It has been so sad here, she was more than a "pet" and was well intergrated in our lives and it will be a long time before we can accept our loss. Those of you who know Crumb and his Bear know he took exceptional care of her and that she loved him so much. Damn good dog, and damn smart, we've suffered a great loss!

My deepest sympathies for your loss. I lost my Australian Shepherd, Suzie Q, a little over two years ago. Hardly a day passes when something around the house doesn't remind me of her. If only more people possessed the demeanor of our dogs...

Thanks for being a good care-giver and friend to Bear.

Crumsnatcher, Losing Bear is a great loss to our hiking family. I met you and Bear at Miss Janets in 02 and remember that day like it was yesterday. She was such a gentle soul. Bear will surely be missed.

I can relate to your feelings.

I put out food for a feral cat and he has put his trust in me. He allows me to pet him and love him. I can't wait to see him in the mornings. He's been around for 1-1/2 years. He's beautiful. I named him Adam, here's a photo of him...I hope it makes you feel a little better.

I just lost my springer a couple months ago so I can definitly relate. Its too bad a good dog can't last longer, but they sure bring joy to our lives while they are here. Sorry about your loss.
