There is a new site looking for support owned by Richard Brownkatz at http://athikersonline.org

I'm sure they're nice folks......but is a new A.T. forum site needed or necessary?

Not in my case.

Variety is the spice of life. Just as with tents and hammocks, no single forum fits everyone's needs.

And any cook will tell you that most people tend to over-spice.

Looks like a good site. Thank Gawd we live in the USA and can have a variety of choices. When their site gets a pic gallery, I'll put it on my favs.

Jack, if a forum isn't needed, it will not fly. WB just isn't for everyone - it is too big and too rowdy for some - I'm glad other options exist for those who aren't comfortable here.

I went to register and they sent me an email saying my registration didn't meet their standards, so it was rejected. O-kay.

Was it because of the coke machine in your pic in your gallery?:D

Seriously, that doesn't sound right. Bunch of elitists.

They routinely reject Warraghiyagey's anyway on the basis of non-existence.

Wow sounds like EHarmony," Sorry Nobody would ever love you".

But seriously, I welcome a new site, I know a lot of people thought Wingfoot was wrong for keeping it on subject. But how many times Have I clicked on Thread here, to see it totaly get off subject, or everyother entry is a oneline answer from #$%%^$^% or ^**^^%$^% or *(*&*%^&^% that has nothing to do with original subject.

I had to give an alternate e-mail address was all it said. They don't take g-mail, but that's okay.

I’m Richard Brownkatz from ATHikersOnline.

“…is a new A.T. forum site needed or necessary?”

I don’t know, Jack. Dave B. started the site last year and was going to close it for lack of interest and time even though the software lease isn’t up yet. I bought it for practically nothing, both to learn about running a forum and in case there was a need or desire for it. Being new to both the AT and forums, I figured, what the hell.

“…if a forum isn't needed, it will not fly.” I agree with Frolicking Dinosaurs. So I’ll keep the site up at least until the software lease is up in November. If people want the site to remain, I’ll keep it going. If they don’t, I won’t. Users can make of it what they will.

I have no special plans for the site, no agenda or philosophy for it. I’ll save that for other venues. I do want to keep it non-profit, meaning if any money was to come in then, after expenses like hosting and the software lease, I’d like to donate to AT organizations that preserve and protect the trail. I love the trail and I’m selfish so that’s what I’d like to do with any profit. So eventually I hope to have ads.

If anyone is interested in the site, then I would appreciate any ideas that people have about what they would like the site to be. There is no sense, to me, in competing with White Blaze. I don’t think I could do a tenth as good a job as these folks have. I’m a donating member of WB, enjoy it daily and have learned a great deal. Eventually (this “eventually” stuff is about me learning how to use the software) I’ll link to WB from ATHikersOnline (I’ve received permission) and have already done so from my other site.

I apologizeto you, gsingjane. I’m new to this administrator stuff and am having a hell of a time dealing with spam. I was getting a lot of user names like ViagraForAll from gmail and finally just banned gmail and started moderating new registrations. Another person on WB has been tutoring me on the software and eventually I hope to be as good at killing spam as White Blaze is. I removed the gmail block so if you want to try again, you’re certainly welcome, although I think LIHikers (“Oh great, another way to spend time instead of doing the things I really should be doing at home”) makes the most sense of all.

WB rowdy? No way!

I agree Hooch, not rowdy, just kind of spirited.

As long as you don't open those huge double metal doors and enter the "politics" forum. Cause it's evil in there.

My bet is that this guy started the site directly after an encounter with LW.

I like to think of WB as a "robust" forum. I agree, the politics forum is a lil too much. I get along with some folks a lot better outside of there. But I'm an idiot sometimes, so it may just be me.:D

Hi Brownkatz, thanks for the reply but... my email addy ends with sbcglobal.net. I don't use gmail and never have. So I don't know if it's other glitches in your approval process or what.

Ahh, from what I have seen - after a few months the "stick just to the subject" mentality gets really old and a site starts to 'bore out' meaning people get tired of it and want to go back to cutting up with their friends they make on-line. In the end that is what seems to keep drawing back the regulars to any site. Other sites that try to stay just on subject, well I can name a couple, they are almost dead or died.

As the admin of a site of comparable size, but based totally on Bama athletics, I have to agree completely with Rock. As long as threads stay interesting to the participants and stay within the civility guidelines, etc., we let them wander. As with here, we strictly segregate political and non-sports topics and threads...
