Check out Gossamer Gear (http://gossamergear.com/), Mountain Laurel Designs (http://mountainlaureldesigns.com/), Six Moon Designs (http://sixmoondesigns.com/) or the Golite Jam 2.

The ULA Conduit (http://www.ula-equipment.com/photos.htm) is an excellent pack. I used one on my End-to-End of the Long Trail last year and other hikes. This year I'm going to use an MLD Zip (http://www.mountainlaureldesigns.com/shop/product_info.php?cPath=25&products_id=49&osCsid=e2d045cc68c364be7197e62fb82a1acf) for a thru of the Colorado Trail, after I do another LT hike using an extreme lightweight MLD Revelation.

is the conduit frameless?

right on , at first was hoping for something without a hip belt but the more i think of the infamous "notch" think itd be better to not have the weight tossing left and right as i scramble

During a 5-month thru-hike, you'll spend one hour in Mahoosuc Notch. I wouldn't base my pack selection on that one hour. Overall pack weight is a better determinant for the need of a hip-belt.

Mahoosuc Notch is a blast! I've done several hikes there and always spent hours playing on the rocks. It is also a very beautiful place. Lots of moss and wildflowers. It really is a big kids jungle gym. There are many other places where a hipbelt will come in handy to stabilize your load and prevent it swaying left and right. Mahoosuc Notch isn't the only place on the AT where serious rock scrambling is required, but it is the most fun!

Yes, it is frameless. A virtual frame is made by either putting a sleeping pad in the built in slot, or else shaped around the entire circumference of the pack. Both work extremely well with this relatively short pack. Each method has it's particular advantage.

i dont know about everyone else but i tend to carry the load really high on my back ( i call it a consequence of playing computer games to much i have a slumpy posture so to get the pack where its suposed to be i have to really tighten down the shoulder straps
