J5MAN and I hiked from Blackhorse to Daleville, Va last Sat. We found these feathers on the trail. The only bird I would guess they might be from is a pheasant. Does anyone know?

We also came across this country mouse out on the trail.

I sure don't know, but I wouldn't think pheasant feathers would have so much yellow in them. Interesting feathers.

I'm sure you're right. I can't think of a bird with that much yellow in it either. I guessed a pheasant only because they have a lot of color on them. The only bird I KNOW that's yellow around here is a Finch....these feathers are longer than a finch.

I think that's it...a Northern Flicker. Thanks Shades of Gray.

That's a nice site you linked to.

Looks like the yellow-shafted flicker, aka "lunch". Feathers here:

I think its a flicker/sapsucker too. I had the same left overs in my yard not too long ago. I dont think the bird left them tho, I think they were 'taken' from it! ie: lunch.
