View Full Version : Where's Wildcowboy?

I've been out of the loop (offline) lately and will be back on the trail again in a few days. Hope this question isn't taboo, but I was wondering if anyone has heard from Wildcowboy. If memory serves..., he should be starting his record-breaking thru-hike on the 1st of May.
Any updates?

4eyedbuzzard
04-28-2008, 00:49
Rumor has it he has abandoned the thru-hike (simply too easy) and will instead attempt to travel around the world in 80 days(catchy title) - unsupported, of course. 311 miles per day would mean he would have to average 19.5 mph - certainly doable as humans have been clocked at up to 27 mph.

Besides: It's his dream. He should go for it. Just do it.

Seriously, my understanding is that he's dropped the idea and there has been no news.

There are a lot of unrealistic dreamers (and egotists) out there. My new boss (all of thirty something years), who is (according to him) a world class downhill skier (why hadn't I heard of him before?????) says he's considering running RI's North-South trail (78 miles) in a day. Could it be done? Probably. By him? Not likely. He's about 6' tall and weighs around 190 and has short legs and a small pot belly.
Boasters fall hard (if they ever even try).
Logic (and cold, hard facts) have a way of short-circuiting the ego.

Actually, I did it with a friend two weekends ago in four days and a few hours. A couple of days under 20 miles, a couple of days slightly over. Boredom was the biggest problem.
Totally doable? For a real runner, no problem.
I would have died half way into it if I tried to run it. I enjoyed the wooded parts, though.

Most "trail runs" are actually a mixture of power hiking and running over distances that long(except for the elite few).

Having done a good chunk of the NST, I have to say it does not hold any special allure for me. The wooded parts are nice and would be killer in mid-late October. The rest is too much road (Rhode? :D) walking. Even the "rural" parts of Rhody are very built up now.

Maybe if I found myself in RI again for an extended time
,I would thru-hike this trail. Can't see me visiting RI and backpacking though. :)

I seen a guy that did a 41 in the Smokies. He was a southbounder that looked in pretty dang good shape. Of course I didn't see him walk it, just taked to him in the shelter. Based on the way he said it I had no reason to doubt him. We were stopped late at Double springs when he came rolling in. He just said matter-of-factly that he had started at Davenport Gap Shelter that morning.

That's my point. 41 miles in the smokies is great, but has anyone even done one 74 mile day on a regular thru hike? And I'm not talking about a slack pack. I once saw a Ultra light Thru do a 47 mile day. That just goers to show how full of it WC was.

So does that mean you started at 19E to do that?

I have done the "Damascus by Dawn!" 64-mile hike from the north (Rt. 16 - Mt Rogers HQ) four times - once with a full pack and three times without support.

I have done the "Damascus by Dawn!" 64-mile hike from the south (starting just south of Walnut Mt. Rd.) three times - one without support and two with support.

My son, Forest, did the "'Damascus by Dawn!" 64-mile hike from the north when he was 15 y.o. He had support from his Dad, Grampy and his sister Heather.

The "Damascus by Dawn!" hike were the southern versions of the Coonecticut Superhikes (56 miles in 24 hours) and The Spring Stroll (150 miles in three days - CT/MA and a little of VT).

These northern 24-hour endurance hikes took place from 1974 into the early 80's.
The southern 24-hour endurance hikes took place from the early 80's until 2002.

My longest day of hiking (with support) was 71 miles north into Pearisburg in 23 hours and 45 minutes as a fund-raiser for the Nuclear Freeze Movement (Legs against Arms) in 1984.

I sort of cheated. It WAS microbrew..but was in cans. (http://www.oskarblues.com/news/detail.php?ID=2816) So I went luxurious and light.[1]

My other greatest hiking endeavor was the time I did the equally arduous beach chair-to-cabana-and back quad. It involved sun tan lotion, some mixed drinks and a blonde Swede named Ursula....

Then I woke up. We all have to dream of future endeavors, though.

[1] Good beer in cans. It does exist..and Oskar Blues itsself is a favorite post-hike stop for me. Be it couch to fridge, or in Rocky Mtn NP. Heck, they had a Merle Haggard Birthday Bash recently w/ an all you can eat BBQ for $10! And their canned beer is delicious. What's not to like ???!!?!?)

You asked LW about W-O-R-K and expected an answer??? Now that's funny. There must be a chamber of commerce in or around Damascus that could help you.

The county chamber might be helpful...or direct you to someone who might know about the construction industry in the area...

http://www.washingtonvachamber.org/new.htm thats some funny s***. thanks for the laugh TinMan. i haven't met too many people in the A.T. community that i didn't like. L.W. is a good ****,maybe if i was a little smarter i would'nt have to work so hard myself....SPELLING B CHAMPION-RUNNER UP.

i did 72 miles, not quite 74 but had full pack and took no zeros either side of it on my thru in 03. stopped to talk to everyone i met and even spent 30 minutes chatting to someone a friend knew. took 22 hours all inSqueaky, you're obviously a freak of nature; so far out on the tail of the normal distribution that the rest of us can't really comprehend. Either that, or you're a mechanically-assisted alien in hiking clothes, which would be a good way of hiding unusual odors.

Hike on!

Getting out there and enjoying yourself is what is to be proud of. Be it speed records, ambling along or somewhere in between.

What's the farthest anyone has walked in one stretch with no sleep on the AT?

Sam Swisher-McClure and I walked 72.4 miles without support and no sleep on 12/21-22/97 (from Walnut Mt. Shelter to the River Outfitters at Jones Branch just past Erwin).
Shortest daylight of the year, single digit temps for most of the hike, 2-4 inches of fresh snow above 3,000' and 1-2' snow drifts atop Big Bald.

Not really.
However, they did call me WOTW (Warren of the Wilderness) during my graduate school years at the University of Connecticut and WD40 during the 1990 At Circle Expedition (since I was 40 at the time).

Actually, it was credulous that was removed in the dictionary back in 1994.

IMO he's not worth the effort to track down.

IMO he's not worth the effort to track down.

My concern is that something is going on in this man's life that we don't know about, and he was looking for an escape route by hiking the trail in honor of his mother.

I truly hope that he is doing fine, and even if he doesn't break the record, or starts later this month, but I hope and pray that he is OK.
