Just curious, why do some knobs and mountain tops get the title of Butt. There is Big Butt not far from me on Cold Spring Mountain near Jerry Cabin. The outside of Abingdon VA there is a spot called the Butt.

I am not trying to be funny, just trying to figure out why some places have such a name.

Just a variation of the spelling of "Butte," just without the affectation of an additional "e."

Here's what David Edwin Lillard says in the little tome "Appalachian Trail Names"--

"Big Butt Mountain - Westerners have the gentrified term of 'butte,' but its meaning is the same as 'butt': an isolated protuberance of a mountain."

It is probably butte...not butt. A hill that rises abruptly from the surrounding region; has a flat top and sloping sides...webster

Regional variations in geographic naming conventions abound. I'm sure there are a lot more that I'm not recalling right now.

Stamp = Gap = Notch
Butt = Butte
Mount = Mountain = Peak
Brook = Stream = Run = Creek = Branch
