thinks that i should go for a hike to "level out" the old noggin from an above average crappy quarter at work. Anywho, i have a few days, and i think that i want to hike the length of NJ in one shot. How many days does one think that this would take? I have not done my research quite yet, planning on picking up a data book tommorow (which one, there are several threads on this topic with no clear resolution. So any suggestions would be great). Any thoughts?

Thanks ahead of time.

Long trip deserves several: :banana:banana:banana:banana:banana:banana:banana

I think 5 days would be a reasonable amount of time to finish, but maybe allot a week. I've only done the southern 28 miles of New Jersey (to Culvers Gap US 206) and it's pretty rocky but overall nice trail

The A.T. in Jersey is 70 some miles...and the best part of the State.

None of it is really hard, so a week should be enough time, doing 10 miles or so per day...

I grew up in North NJ so i have done several hikes on the AT (my first trip ever was to sunfish pond) This is going to be a great trip. Now. just to figure out where to go. I think i am going to take about 4 days. Now, just to figure out which trail guide to get today :D

Really doesn't matter which one - there will never be a resolution to this debate. It all boils down to personal preference. I recommend getting one of each to support friends of the AT. Then make your decision on which to carry.

New Jersey for me was a pleasant surprise, I really enjoyed the state very much. Some rocky areas earyl on that reminded me of PA, but overall, a great experience. Of course there are rumors about bears in the state, but I didn't see even one (!)

That's because they're all raiding the neighborhood trashcans/birdfeeders.:sun

Here's a reasonable 5 day, NOBO schedule based on shelters, starting from the NJ side of Delaware Water Gap and covering most of the state:

14 miles - Brink Road Shelter
13 miles - Gren Anderson Shelter
13 miles - High Point Shelter
12 miles - Pochuck Mountain Shelter
13 miles - Wawayanda Shelter

You can park a car (http://rohland.homedns.org/AT/State/state_menu/at_state_menu.aspx?id=3) at the DWG state park as well as Wawayanda State Park; or catch a shuttle (http://www.appalachiantrail.org/atf/cf/{D25B4747-42A3-4302-8D48-EF35C0B0D9F1}/ATshuttleWEB_Mar_17_2008.pdf) from one to the other.

Here's a website of AT milepoints (http://www.thebackpacker.com/trails/at_list.php?state=&location_start=Delaware+Water+Gap%2C+Pa.&shelter_start=&milemarker_start=&mile_direction_start=From+Katahdin&search_distance=85&search_direction=N&location_end=&shelter_end=&milemarker_end=&mile_direction_end=From+Katahdin) that I use for preliminary section planning.

Actually, interesting story, my first trip with my father, we woke up to the sight of a bear knocking the tree over that our bear bag was in . ate everything except for a granola bar and a tea bag (And that was covered in slobber). Pretty cool experience, but they definetly do exist, so please be careful.

Dude- you got yourself a keeper. I wouldn't be broadcasting that around here if I were you.
Can she cook too?

This looks like a good trip. I think this may be the plan i use. Thanks Kerosene i really appreciate the info. And that goes to everyone. Thanks much. Like the banner says "I gotta get out of here". Work sucks, actually a lot lately, and this is how i used to relax so this is def going to be a good thing.

Hey Kerosene, did you get a subscription to this site? Do you think this is worth 49.95?

Here's another view:
On my thru-hike last year, there was talk promoted by Sapra and Achilles about " Spend Just One Night in Jersey" . I don't know if they accomplished it. For sure, it would be no problem for Achilles, who pulled a 40 miler early on in North Carolina, of all places.

NJ is where i live, i could do PA, bt i want to finish a whole state as opposed to just doing a lot of miles (which will come later on in other sections :D). The bears are not that bad as long as you are smart about your food, etc.
