Hey all, can anyone suggest better maps than the ones available from the ATC for Tn-NC (AKA Set 10)? I am not interested in PC based mapping s/w, I already have some. Good ole, full sized maps. Thanks in advance.

Do you have the ones that came out this year?

No, I was looking to buy. But before I did I wanted to see if there was any suggestions for something better.

I dig maps.:D

They are pretty good - better than the old ones. I really like them. But if you are looking for a better scale for more detail they are not any change.

Yeah, I have sorta gotten used to the 1:62000 type. Nothing like a nice 1:25000 or 1:50000 MGRS map.

On the ATC site it say 2005, did they update again?

I just looked at mine - it was 2005. I just bought them last year. They were a great improvement over my older maps of that section.

National Geographic Maps (http://shop.nationalgeographic.com/gateway/392/246.html). Good maps but I'm not sure if they have the profile on them. That is why I opted for the AT maps.

See you on the trail,

The NG maps are beautiful but 9.95. The ATC pack is 4 maps and the book for 19.95 (tho I already have the Smokies map that came with my GA-NC set, maybe it's been updated).

The present edition of maps for TN/NC are pretty good.

The National Geographic maps are really good for other trails and forest roads.

The latest topos I would not really rely on because there have been so many major relocations and new shelters that they are really out of date.

USGS topos are definately out...

Thanks for the input everyone, I will probably go with the ATC maps.

Just an update on the maps for general information. The maps look good. The orientation is skewed (not North is up) with the run of the trail. They are nicer than the GA/Nantahala maps in the GA/NC set.

My only gripe is no UTM coords just lat/long. Tho the Trails Illustrated map for GSMNP has the UTM grid now, unlike my older GSMNP map that came with the GA/NC set.

All in all tho, they look good.
