Naw, it is easy to get close too, and an easy walk up a gravel road to the shelter. Check out this map and see if it looks familiar:
http://maps.google.com/maps?ie=UTF8&hl=en&ll=36.122988,-82.051349&spn=0.004836,0.011716&t=h&z=17

This is actually a really good place if something like this is going to happen. I imagine it could have happened south of there, the trail coming down from the back of Jane Bald and the side trail to Long Grassy Bald was a bad mud slide of a trail when I did it.

.3 miles, according to my references...
I walked it, I think it is a little longer than that, probably more like 0.5

RICE

Rest, ice, compression (with an ace or splint) and elevation.

And give it time to heal! I had a sprained ankle in MA. Took me two weeks and it was only grade one. Check here (http://www.arthroscopy.com/sp09005.htm)about sprains, etc.

i know you get more swelling wearing a wrap. staying off it and ibuprofin is the only way. all that other stuff is useless. .

I had a severe ankle injury for two years and had one this past summer in MA on the AT. Ice and a compression wrap (esp ice) is necessary to keep the swelling down so the tissue can begin healing, esp in the first 72 hours of injury. Lots of fluid in there means there is no fresh blood supply getting to the injured area. You can look it up online, but every medical and sports opinion says RICE is the way to go. As it is, you are probably looking at a good 3 to 6 weeks of healing time including Physical Therapy (which you can do on your own once the swelling goes down).
But whatever you want to do...
take care.

Did the same thing April 4 at Horse Gap. There isn't anything like the trail community to come to your aid. Thanks to a couple of hikers, Sam and Bill, who came down the trail behind me about 30 minutes after the fall I was able to get to the road. They contacted Josh (Hiker Hostel) who picked me up in about an hour. James, a trail angel stopped on the road, set up a tarp, and shared apples until Josh arrived. The tarp saved me from a real down pour. Went to the orthopedists in Dahlonega. They are a great team. I was able to remove my brace this last week. Swelling is slowly going down. See you all at Trail Days.

ibuprofen good. Aleve much better, stronger and with more anti-inflammatory properties. Take 3 at a time; 3 times a day for a few days.

Just a word of warning for everyone regarding naproxen products (Brand Names: Aleve, Aleve Caplet, Anaprox, Anaprox-DS, EC-Naprosyn, Naprelan '500', Naprosyn). Sun sensitivity can be a side effect of naproxen. I don't know if it's very common, but last summer I developed it while taking naproxen daily for a knee problem.

The reaction was kind of a cross between mild sunburn and mild hives. I could feel my skin start to prickle and itch with even one minute in the sun, just walking from the car into a store. When I finally figured out what was causing it and stopped the naproxen, my skin took a good 3 weeks to stop reacting.

So if you haven't taken it before, please be aware that this could happen. It wouldn't make for pleasant hiking.

At best it's all an act. At worst a 47 year old man with either a factitious disorder (http://www.clevelandclinic.org/health/health-info/docs/2800/2820.asp?index=9832&src=news)or a cognitive impairment is being cheered on a long-distance hike.
Yeah it's a real knee-slapper.

and I responded to Camojack before I read this gem.

all I can say is that I do not want to meet you on the trail of life.

You sir have raised my Southern Blood.

There's no disorder, as Mattski displays no symptoms real or otherwise. Unless you're insinuating that excessive kindness is some kind of disorder. I'd say the opposite is the case. Maybe you're really a nice guy with a factitious disorder who is intentionally mean to give the impression you have some kind of real disorder. By the way, is that an actual disorder? I mean if pretending to be sick is itself a sickness then aren't you really sick? This post is getting too recursive for me so I'm gonna stop now....

Well, I guess if you were able to cross a Bacon with a chicken you would come up with and egg that just screamed "Eat me".

I hadn't thought of that, but now that you mention it, your probably right. Maybe when he gets here to PA we'll arrange on "2nd official rescue" for him.
