The revolving door of our legal system at work
Smith never should have been released from prison - he murdered two people! I did read that right...right? This guy murders two hikers in 1981 and in 1996 he goes free ? Maybe I ought to read the article again slowly.

If you take a gun out on the AT...wait until people are down for the night and then rise up and start shooting them how can that be anything other than FIRST DEGREE MURDER ?

How the hell was this guy out on parole? Not only did he kill TWO people, he stabbed one of them 12 times! What does a guy have to do to be considered dangerous???

What a travesty that this guy was released to kill again. The men and families of the men that he shot this time sure would not agree that he had been rehabilitated or was on good behavior.

Blame our broken system that uses plea agreements and deals rather than evidence to convict people. The prosecution offered him 2nd degree murder and he took it.

There should never be deals and/or agreements.

Give him the Fing chair. I read the Jess Carr's novel, "Murder on the Appalachian Trail." about 5 years ago. Made my blood boil. There should have never been a need for that book.

Was the 1981 murder the famous Wapiti murder? So he did it again, in the same area?

Just catching up... looks like it was the exact same person in the same area. Creepy! Interesting to read past posts about the Wapiti shelter... Seems like the AT community had no idea the guy was out of jail. That's unfortunate.
