does anyone here use their sleeping pad underneath their tent as a ground cloth and sleep on top of it? wouldnt that still retain the insulation properties of the pad? this would work better on narrow solo tents (about 3' wide); just trying to figure out how to shave some oz's

I have never tried that but it sounds like it would work. I do not use a ground cloth. NOt really neccasary if you are careful where you set up your tent. Thru hiked on 07 and did not use one, no problems.

I would rather have a hole in my tent floor than in my pad. Or are you speaking of closed cell foam?

I have done it a couple of times, cowboy camping, would not reccommend it..
