I have a chance to join up with some hiker friends at Catawba VA. Problem is I live in South Carolina. I can stay out with them for about 80 miles (8 days) and then I need to get back home to catch a flight to California. Any ideas how I can get up there and get back?? This town has no Greyhound service. The nearest Amtrak station is over 60 miles away. If I have to leave my van somewhere I need to be assured it's safe.
There is no public transportation through there. There is a HUGE parking lot where the AT crosses Rt. 311. Many park there, leave their vehicles there. The road is so heavily traveled that folks around here don't worry too much about break-ins.
If you really do not want to leave your vehicle there you could contact the local AT Club and see if someone there has a better option for you.

I should have said huge by HIKING standards. That section of the AT is heavily used by day hikers because it is the closest get-on for both McAfee's and Dragon's Tooth, and is so close to Roanoke.

email Hikerhead or sweetpeastu - they are both in the area and may have some ideas for you

Send a PM to Hikerhead. He lives in Roanoke and has helped hikers before plus he knows the trail and roads around there very well.
When are you going to Catawba? I'm taking the Greyhound to Roanoke on the 25th of this month. Passionphish is picking me up and taking me to the trail. Also, I second calling Hikerhead too.
