I plan on beginning my thru hike in april of 2009. This is going to be my retirement present to myself after 26 years in the military (Marines/Army). I am a bit overwhelemed and could use all the advice I can get. Looking forward to actually seeing some of the sights that I have only seen pics of.:)

There is a ton of good information here. I would advise, if you have time, taking at least a couple of shakedown trips for a few days each, figuring out what works and what doesn't.
Also, checklists! Always do a checklist before setting out on a trip, even if you hate doing it.
