Cute... :-?

In a perfect world, site membership would be wide open like it used to be. But life on the internet has gone steadily downhill. There are just too many people out there that just have way too much free time on their hands and use it to create way too much work for moderators.

Guess I missed out on some discussions about "them". I thought I had an id over there. I know I posted some trail reports before they went to vbulletin.

The site owner/moderator of a forum called "a Northeast hiking and climbing community" lives in Oahu and is worried about "outsiders"? Fascinating.

TinMan, do you know if that last thread was started before or after "Views" started restricting membership? That could be the very thing the admin was talking about.

It says posted today at 12:27 am

The trail reports section is open to anyone. The only restriction is that one cannot add or reply to the thread.

Lately several "porno" listings posted as a attempt to "bash" the site.

I used to be a frequent poster, but not being a "peakbagger" as most on the site are, I don't much anymore.

IMHO "peakbagging" is like birdwatching by using an empty paper towel roll as a telescope.

Ya can't reply or register, but ya can start an thread without being registered. Weird.

Peakbaggers probably think AT hikers are off. :)

I have never moderated a site before and I'm sure it can be a time consuming job but I think it is also the cost of doing business. I don't know anyone their, live too far away to attend any events. Well I'm happy here at WB :)

It seems that you can view trail condition reports and possibly post a trail report without being registered. I've never posted a trail report, but frequently view the reports especially in the Winter.

You obviously don't get out much. Everyone knows that its much better to use two empty tiolet paper rolls as binoculars. Far lighter and much more compact.

Anyone can post in the trail conditions section which includes the following states: Maine (http://www.viewsfromthetop.com/trail/me/index.html)
New Hampshire (http://www.viewsfromthetop.com/trail/nh/index.html)
Vermont (http://www.viewsfromthetop.com/trail/vt/index.html)
New York (http://www.viewsfromthetop.com/trail/ny/index.html)
Massachusetts (http://www.viewsfromthetop.com/trail/ma/index.html)
Rhode Island (http://www.viewsfromthetop.com/trail/ri/index.html)
Connecticut (http://www.viewsfromthetop.com/trail/ct/index.html)
I decided that if I'm not good enough to register and post in the forums than I'm not good enough to post trail conditions and have not.
I often see questions regarding trail/backroad and waterflow conditions in my area which I could readily answer but am not permitted/barred from registration ...so be it.
I do frequent the site for regional info though.

And vice-versa. The term "peakbagging" just doesn't sit well with me. Once again, it turns the outdoors into a contest. Once again bringing the *&% rat race into the woods. G*d forbid you should climb the same mountain twice -- what a waste!

The same can be said for hiking the whole AT.

Yeah, I know. Hiking the whole thing end-to-end in one go is a bit warped. ;) In discussions of these matters, I kinda like Tipi Walter's notion of just immersing yourself in the woods, and to hell with "making miles" or "peakbagging."

A couple of years ago I worked with a "peakbagger" (he was a consultant.) We'd chat from time to time but it was clear from the get-go that we had almost nothing in common in our approach to hiking. He did as much driving as he did hiking, and had no interest in spending a night in the woods. Different strokes...

From my perspective, the only reason to "make miles" is to 1) see new things, 2) get exercise, and 3) because I have somewhere I have to be. Good reasons all. It's only when it turns into a bragging match about how many miles that I find it objectionable.

Same for climbing peaks, there is nothing wrong with climbing as many peaks as you can, in order to get the exercise and the scenery-- the "experience." It's only when it becomes a contest external to the activity itself that it becomes strange.

The few "peakbaggers" I have encountered seem to be out there for fun and collecting a badge or whatever is much less important. They collect peaks instead of miles. Different, but the same. They are just getting out there and enjoying the outdoors in the way they prefer.

Hey, I used to resemble that comment;), but switched over years ago and sectioned the AT.

BTW, the webmaster on VFTT, was temporarilly assigned by his employer to work in Hawaii for a couple of years and handed over moderating duties to a couple of qualified locals. He still has a house in New England and is moving back this summer. He also pays to run the website out of his pocket (with occasional donations). He went to a registered members website a few years back as the amount of garbage that was being posted (Usually at odd hours on weekends) was getting excessive. Even now people are spamming the trail conditions.

Not real tough to get registered, just find someone to sponsor you.

VFTT is a fine site, great info, nice folks. They might have a different focus than AT backpackers, but it is just as valid.

I used to use VFTT all the time back when I was in Rhody.

Wow..10+ yrs ago.

The site has been around in one form or another for a while now.

Anyway, I thought it was a good and informative site. Glad to see it is still up.

I've been a member at VFTT Much longer than here, through it's various forms and resign-ups due to crashes. I feel like I can wear both hats, having been a peakbagger for a long time now.
I think both can get along - I go through phases where the last thing I want to do is climb anything and phases where the last thing I want to do is sleep outside (or even hang from a tree :D)

The sign-up rule was put in place due to all the issues with the AMC Molehills board and the number of complaints. There were a couple of real A-holes over there causing trouble. I had heard of threats of religious basis and a few others. I had heard at one point someone wanted to sue. That's why AMC took down the Mountains & Molehill board. and I am sure those misfits would have migrated over to VFTT.

Yikes!!! I am a member there as well, admittedly not very active... I had forgotten about the split due to the Doibetes NFP slide show, IIRC.
