I recently finished reviewing this and thought that I would post the link here for anyone else who may be interested in the project that has been on going on Bear Mountain and most likely will be going on for a few more years. This is a massive project for an area that sees some of the heaviest use of the trail.

I'm so grateful to the folks who are working on this. The trail over Bear Mountain does, indeed, need serious help. I recall losing the trail at one point halfway up, though luckily found another trail going around the mountain, which met up with the AT on the other side. Imagine my horror when I went back a year later to hike the section I missed, only to find that all I missed was a dangerous road walk! Needless to say, I let my blue blaze stand alone, with no guilt.
Kudos to those who are working to correct these issues (lack of proper signage, dangerous roadwalk, neglected trails, etc.).
