I am building a specialized pack for firefighting. Where can I get just the frame, shoulder harness and belt?

There are some for sale on eBay. These are frames only though. You could then add your own shoulder harness and waist belt.

I am also making a prototype backpack using old frames and I put out a WTB and got two of them for the shipping.

Couple thoughts...

(1) Check thrift stores or eBay for external frame packs where the pack bag is beat up but the frame is in decent shape.

(2) Check www.scoutstuff.org -- can't get a direct link to work for you, but from the catalog index go to Camping, then Backpacks, then "Adjustable Horizon II Pack Frame" -- no hipbelt shown, but one may be available. Saw one at the local Scout Shop and it looked pretty hefty, which you may need if carrying firefighting gear.

Good luck.

I think that Camp Trails used to sell just frame, harness and belt. Look for it at campmor, or go to the camp trails website and find a dealer.

Also, I check with Kelty. That's almost the only two firms still making external frames.

Good luck!!

The sportsmans guide sometimes has them, for carrying stuff to/from hunting cabins.

www.sportsmansguide.com

If they arn't on the web site, call 800-888-3006 & ask. They sometimes have stuff in stock, but not on the site or in the catalog & the phone staff is excellent, & knowledgable.

Too bad it's not offered in some exotic material (Ti or carbon) to reduce weight....I'm thinking I need one of these stashed away for hard times......

Camp Trails makes the Freighter Frame for carrying wood, kills, saws and other gear. Frame w/ a ledge on the back. Great workout rig, by the way. You can tie a cinder block or two onto the frame. This is a pretty good rig for what the fireman's talking about...Check it out at www.campmor.com (http://www.campmor.com) . There are other sources, tooo. www.camptrails.com (http://www.camptrails.com) . KZ
